Vintage Keyboard vs. Newer Models

Hola, what are some good vintage keyboards I should be looking for? I'm just interested in accompanying my MPC. Or should I keep my eyes set on the Yamaha Motif?

things in a vintage I see as an advantage maybe would be a better bass sound (don't know why I think that) and a cheaper price but possibly a lot more headaches involved

u should try out some of the autoria moog plugins, minimoog and moog modular, as well as cs-80
amazing replications especially once u run them through some hardware eq, or compressors n ish

just to get a taste of some analog even..


future retro just came out with a new analog synth/sequencer, another 303 type deal, but looks interesting...

i love the moog voyager thats what i want.

JUNO 106 - slamming keyboard

like they said above if you're looking for analogish sounds (arturia soft synths and juno 106). jupiter series is pretty hot too. if you're looking for a rompler, check out the Roland XP series (XP30 XP50 XP60 XP80). They're the predecessors to the Fantom series, and sound better than fantom IMHO, plus you can find them pretty cheap on ebay (or craigslist depending on where you live).

If you're looking for a sampler keyboard the Ensoniq ASR-10 and EPS16+ can't really be beat.

I'm rockin the ASR10 (melodic sampling), MPC2KXL (drums and stabs), Arturia Moog Modular V (analoggy sounds), and NI Absynth (software rompler). One of these days I'm going to swap in the XL for a 60II, or maybe just add an S950. I also wanna get a JV1080, the rack version of an XP50. I'm not letting myself buy any new gear tho until I get some attention on the scene here.

what's a rompler keyboard? I've heard that term tossed around and it seems to be the newer crisper sounding ones but I'd like to know for sure

rompler is a wanky little word that was made up to mean that it's a digital keyboard with ROM (read-only memory) containing sound patches. different from a sampler which has RAM that has read and write abilities. it has nothing to do with how new or old it is.

could I use a Juno 106 which has Midi to control a rack mounted version of newer sounds? specifically that new Motif ES rack?

any drawbacks?

juno 106 has midi, so yeah, you could. the only concern might be, does the 106 have velocity sensitivity as a controller. trust me, you want velocity sensitivity. You might want to post that question on the synth board at futureproducers.com. those bastards know everything.

No, the 106 does not have a velocity keyboard. It is one of the most inspiring keyboards ever made, amazing since the architecture is so simple, but when you spend time with one you'll feel it.

You are really talking two different beasts comparing it to the motif, not to mention a big price difference. Motif gets you a lot more for a lot more, but couldn't replace a 106 IMO.

Vintage is the difficult word here to get thru. Vintage could mean too many things. Since I'm cheap and usually broke, I'm gonna interpret it to mean, "good olde gear that sounds nice, but that is hella cheap."

So, I would suggest the Casio CZ101 or the VZ synths. The Yamaha TX81z.
The Kawai K1, K1M, or K1R. The Korg M1, T3 or M1R. The Roland MT32 or UT33 or is it UT330? There are others too.

All of these are pretty cheap to get. Cheap as $25./...no higher than $500.

well if under 500 is the limit, then you can include a whole bunch of analog too. The evolver being one, as well as the juno 106.

Damn nobody mention the Oberheim Matrix 6. I got a 1000 and am looking to get the 6 or 6R so I can edit.

yeah, dump that 1000 and get the 6, but make sure it doesn't hum or vibrate.
