The more I create music with my MPC X...

The way Akai is going doesn't provide me with power. Anything someone does on the MPCs l can do it also in less time. Like Unreal said you gotta know your DAW. I have 2 that's what makes it fun. I use the tools that help me achieve my goal.

I have the talent the DAWs enhance my position and take my talent to the next level. I feel confident to get things done and that's good.

The biggest block for me with software is actually the options. If you are not disciplined, you can spend hours digging through loop libraries, synth patches... whatever... it does go deep, and it can run wild.

At the end of the day, I've rocked a lot of software, and I've rocked a lot of hardware... and I've just settled into a more DAWless environment more because it is less maintenance for me. Do I still enjoy jamming with Ableton, absolutely... is Reason still fun... sure thing... but for me I don't care to go back to the days I had several DAWs, mountains of synths, and a whole lot of updates, upgrades etc... going on.

Knowing your DAW doesn't mean anything to me because you have to know whatever your're using to get the best out of it.

I use to love creating music in DAWs, I've done albums and college radio hits using only FL Studio, and Maschine but it's nowhere as rewarding like it is as when I'm just using the MPC which is a very intuitive and musical experience.

The MPC X is no slouch, and like I attempted to convey a few times in this discussion, I'm talking mostly about the music creation process.

I just think the MPC X is great for what it is, what's wrong with that?

I'm a 100% Hybrid user and the main reason I use an MPC, is the same reason I use a MIDI keyboards. I want to actually play the music in real time, not just mouse click or step sequence. I do find many people dislike using a laptop/desktop software DAW, but usually that's because the laptop/desktop is under powered and not optimized for music. Also they don't have proper tactile control, that interfaces with the software.

I don't use different DAWs and I limit my plug ins to what I need. I find the MPC is good for sequencing and sampling. But as an audio editor it's not intuitive enough. Speaking strictly for myself, the best feature the MPC has added, is the ability to export stems and render two tracks.

The main downfall is it's inability to truly network with modern studio. All my sounds are on my servers and the fact I can't simply, connect the MPC'S Ethernet to my network switch and access any sound on my server is LAME!

Other than that, make music and don't make excuses. Directed at no one in particular and directed at everyone.

You’re 100% correct, which is why it was ridiculous for Charlie (and clearly a personal attack aimed at yours truly) to suggest there is an “issue” at all. Every single and EP I’ve released in the last 11 years was done 100% in a DAW, and I certainly have no intention of not using my DAW of choice again. It’s just that the music creation process on my Live (and now Live 2) is a whole other ballgame, and I’m enjoying the shit out of it.

Hold up, are you saying that you render your parts to audio files and use those audio files as clips in your DAW of choice?

Sometimes. Depends on the mood. Sometimes I track and play everything into the DAW in real time. Sometimes, I compose and arrange then track everything through external gear. Sometimes, I'll only use the MPC as midi drum controller. Sometimes, I use two MPC, throw a dj mixer in between and dj a live set. Sometimes, I use it to push external sound module.
