So swing only affects the track?

yeah i'd say read that as it will give you a far more comprehensive understanding of program changes...in short they are messages that select drums sets or sounds/patches on external synths/effects units....read those pages and hopefully you'll crack it....obviously any further questions just come back-

if your tunes are likely to have a lot of movement program changes and control changes are essential unless you're dr octopus....

Cheers for that I was at work when I asked so did not have my manual with me, I have read that part before and didn't quite understand it. At the moment I am working on my xl mixer and monitors and havn't really stepped into the realm of hooking keyboards up with midi yet. I think 64 pads should do me until then.

Well I had a good read of pages 110 (xl Manual) onwards all about programs.

So you can create a program which contains upto 64 pads of sounds using banks A-B. You can also have 24 programs running in the MPC at once but only use 4 at a time.

Just a few questions:

How does everybody utalise this. For instance you could have a program for drums one for a chromatic scale of a certain sound etc... Can anyone give any examples of how they use their programs?

Does anybody use 4 programs at a time because thats a lot of sounds!! 256 in total

Also could you have a sound module and set 64 of the sounds from the module to a program and then trigger them by assigning them to the various banks/pads within a program.

I would just like to know how everyone organises their programs just some examples please.

an example from an old tune:

prog 1: all drums going out of individual outs
prog 2: multispanned rhodes
prog 3: multispanned bass
prog 4: free

i may wanna keep the drum set and change the other two programs for my next tune or segue into the next so woul send program change message to change the 2nd and 3rd program when id finished using them-

similarly all my synths will change when the sequence changes...

so dont think of it in terms of numbers of sounds but rather groups of sounds...ive had loads of tunes going with just one program but they haven't involved big multispanned files- when i need something more complex ill always split the instruments up- a prog for drums, a prog for keys a prog for bass etc...they could all go on one prog but you have more control if they are split
