Peace.
IMO this is a bit too generalized. A track can sound good although the drums dosn't sound nice without the other elements. Lets say you have a really nice Loop of a Jazz record. Then you add some drums from a drumbreak but instead of mixing the drums solo you add and mix them while the Loop is playing till you're satisfied.
Now when you solo the drums you hear artifacts in the sound that doesn't sound good (might be a weird resonance on the snare or a light hihat or sticksound in the release of a kick that doesn't really fit to the tempo) It does sound great with the loop tho cause then the 'artifacts' fit to the loop and add character. When you get rid of the artifacs the drums sound nice in solo but with the loop it looses something.
Hope you know what I trying to say
I guess it depends what you trying to accomplish and the role of the elements. Yes, when drums are the backbone they should sound good in solo IMO. But they doesn't neccesery play this role in a track.
I was surprized when I downloaded and heard some of the stems of popular songs and how some of them sound in solo.
peace
