"Short answer = 'No'."
That's definately not true. Dilla uses a plain mpc-3000 (rumored without the 32 megs ram), why can't the mpc1000 do it? Too many of you guys think it's all about the gear. Synths are nice to have, but you can create sounds close to these by yourself and with limited gear. Too much gear is overwhelming, you have too many choices. Should you take a kick from this machine, a sound from what module, a reverb from what processor? When you have limited gear, it creates a personallity for yourself. You create a certain sound. When you have 1 machine, or 1 other sampler, you have no choices, and you have to make you gear work for you. When the reverb doesn't sound all that great, but you use it anyways, re-sample it, layer, your creating you own sound (like madlib/dilla/alchemist/kevin-brown/9th wonder/pete rock/premier/ohh-no/waajeed/ and so on, and so on). It's this sound (dirt) that folks love to copy, but assume it's a certain piece of magical gear that will give them instant results. The truth is that it takes time to develop a style. It takes repetitive practice to create a certain sound, but it doesn't take money to achieve the same results because it can't be copied. Just because madlib uses a 303, does not mean to buy a 303, because you won't get the same sound, even though you use the same machine, he may do something before it even gets to the 303. I'm not going to say how he does his bass, even though I have a fairly good idea, but develop a style for yourself with the gear you already have, and don't worry about what other people are doing. It's good to have a role model and to try and be like them, but discover yourself. Who are you? Now let me hear YOU in YOUR music.. I don't wanna hear madlib, or anyone else if your making the track, I wanna hear you!...nahmean? If you have to use a tape deck to sample with, and re-sample it into the mpc after you filtered it, then your creating a sound that's all you. When you sell a million albums with your tracks on it, everyone will want to know what kind of tape deck your using to make your sounds. Even if you use a fisher price 'my first tape player,' they'l be on ebay for $1000 all because of YOUR sound.
Be a leader.
