This is the type of battling I was used to. Talking friendly trash, then when the battle is over, everybody commenting, giving feedback. Hope these types of battles continue.

Suggestion. How we used to do it in my producer circle:

* Open entry to anyone that wants to enter

* 5 rounds - round 1 is sampling round (someone picks sample), round 2 is a ballad round, round 3 is a boom bap round, round 4 is an R&B round, and round 5 is your best, no matter what genre / style. We used to have like 10 rounds though - included reggae round, Neo-soul round, pop round, rock round, house round. All depends on how deep you want to test your musical chops. I loved the deeper rounds, because I had to study various styles / genres and learn how to write for it.

* Everyone votes each round (objectively) - and can't vote for yourself. Points are totaled each round. Winner is the person that compiles the most points cumulatively across all the rounds.

* This way if you don't submit a beat in a round, you get 0 points, but you're not out of the competition. We also used to do it march madness style, various genres / styles per round, but single elimination tourney - you lose, you're out. But that wasn't fair because someone may get knocked out in a round they're not strong in. So wouldn't recommend single elimination.

* One round could be instrumentals only, one round could require vocals, etc etc. However we wanted it to be. The key is to push our limits. Could submit a released song, or one you make that week. Doesn't matter.

* Everyone is encouraged to give feedback on everyone's submissions, so that we all get better. And if you're too sensitive for the feedback, probably best not to join. This battle is less one single winner. All of us should win because of what we learn. Though the ultimate winner certainly has bragging rights. LOL

* Two weeks in between rounds - because, well... life.

What do you guys think of doing something like this? How many rounds / genres? We could conduct it here on the forums, using the voting. Threads are kept forever, so can easily tally and maintain scores. Admittedly I w wouldn't have time to coordinate and manage it, but I'd certainly participate.

It sounds dope, especially the different genres. That's what I conveyed to Charles, instead of just samples all the time, that can get boring, spice it up with different genres. Pop, RnB, Dance Hall etc.
For me I am in the stoo so I wouldn't be able to participate all the time, and I think people working and what not would play a factor. Charles did the 1V1, one person battles another seems dope also. Give people the chance to make something while the two go at it. Then if it goes well maybe add where multi people battle. But great ideas.

1000+

This works for those who are open minded and choose to leave the ego at the door. Not to mention each person has to be at a certain skill level. Can't take mixing advice serious, from a person who releases music, where the mixes are subpar. Not to mention, they can't upload something, with a half @$$ effort. That's not a knock at anyone in particular, just the truth.

I don’t think there should be any “skill level” requirement. I think those with not as “skilled” can benefit the most from that idea. If you don’t want to take someone’s opinion seriously, then don’t.

I’d hope that participation should be encouraged not restricted. It’s hard enough to get any feedback as it is, if anything feedback should be a requirement, it’s up to each and everyone how they interpret and make use of it.

I've seen some forums with the rule that in order to win, you need to vote/provide some level of feedback... otherwise, you might win by points, but can still lose from lack of participation. Depends what behavior you want to drive.

We need a level of judging 3 ways.

1. How dope the track is.
2. Mixing quality
3. Arrangement of the song.

Keeping it simple.

If you agree or not just say so on that criteria.

Peace

I think this battle is over. I don't see anyone else voting.

Skill level requirement is a must, if we want it to be good. If a person wants feedback on their music, post it up and ask for it, send it people they know. But not requiring a certain skill level, will dramatically lower the quality. My mentors told me this, DON'T STEP ON THE STAGE, IF YOU CAN'T PLAY!

Exactly Charles, you had mentors.... you wouldn’t be here if your mentors had skill requirements. Sorry but youre just trying to build some closed off group...
who sets the bar for skill level and how are these skills defined ? “Skills” is a subjective term.

Everyone has mentors, but most don't seek them out. Mentors don't come to you and pick up and carry you to safety. I hunted them out and was turned down, over and over and over and over and over and over. Until they realized that this kid was not going away.

Nothing is subjective about skills, the song is in A minor, with a 7/8 back beat, with an Adagio tempo, using a ABC structure. GO!

You see that's the issue right there, the kind of battle that Eylac proposed will consist of things like this. What I asked for isn't something crazy. You'll find millions of Balkan (Greeks, Bulgarians) songs that fits that style. The goal is to challenge people! This how you increase engagement, this is how you build comradery. We're all musicians.
