Using MPC2000 with Ableton Live 10

I’ve recently started using an old MPC2000 that I’ve stashed away for a few years...I’ve been using Ableton for a while in the meantime but find writing beats solely in Ableton without the pads a bit frustrating. I’ve googled how to hook the MPC up to Ableton via MIDI and having assigned the right notes to the pads etc, I can trigger sounds in the drum racks by hitting the mpc pads....my problem is that when I hit record in Ableton and play the pads, it’s not recording the patterns I’m playing.

I’m not exactly clear on whether the mpc should be running as the slave or master, I basically just want the mpc to trigger sounds loaded to a drum rack in Ableton but to have the benefit of playing the pads, using note repeat, 16 levels etc on the MPC and for all that to be recorded into Ableton....is this making sense? How am I best setting this up? Or am I better off using using something like an Akai MPD instead?

Have you armed the midi track to record as well, or just arming record for the overall project?

Edit: to be more clear hopefully, you need the midi track, as well as the clip to be recording... I am assuming you know this, but asking to to make sure.

I’ve seen a couple of video’s on YouTube where people have sampled audio out of Ableton into the MPC2000, programmed the beat in the MPC and then tracked it back into Ableton track-by-track but that seems a bit long-winded...I’m trying to find a quicker, more efficient way of using the two together...

I’m thinking that as the MPC is triggering sounds in Ableton with no problems, the problem may be in how I’ve got Ableton set up? I’m not sure how the “track” and “sync” in Ableton’s midi settings should be set to do what I’m trying to do??
