This hits me more like when electric funk started to branch and influence other genres like jazz and R&B. You have the Rhodes runs in there (I did the same), and that for me is what moves it away from this genre - there was no Rhodes used in this genre - I knew that’s what made mine divert from the genre and would make my submission less relevant - and on the low, I was hoping there would be entries that would stick closer to the genre than I did, because I knew I was missing the mark. However yours I think, is closer to the mark than mine is. All in all, solid production.

CR and Danoc (and everyone else),

When I described this type of challenge, there was one part I left out. And it was specifically to address issues like this, because it’s undoubtedly going to happen. You can resolve it as you wish, but submitting another track isn’t going to do anything, if there’s already a foundation of doubt. Here’s the rules I recommend, and it’s how we used to resolve in the production group I was a part of:

* Submit a track (stereo wav render) - in this case it would be the track in question, but doesn’t have to be - just a track from both of you
* Submit the song’s DAW project for another challenge member to validate - complete with midi - can’t just be audio stems. DAW doesn’t matter. Everyone has access to the same DAWs. VSTs doesn’t matter - not trying to validate is plays with the same exact sounds
* Submit a video of you playing 30 seconds of the song - and the playing can’t be playing a shaker lol. Playing the keys part (since this is the instrument in question here). Playing doesn’t have to be perfect.

And with that, I’m backing out of this part of the discussion. Just saying, if you both submit a track, it wouldn’t solve anything because the same questions would undoubtedly arise.

Now back to figuring out who gets my vote - CR or Bees80. Damn I’m glad y’all both brought this heat!!!!

All I have to do is use my ears.

Danoc wrote::Sigh: CharlesRandolph. You know what bro you don't use common sense. My vid is old you dont think l got better. I wasn't hesitating either. Smh.

Lets not mess up the thread. Are we going to battle? Just cause you sstruggle at something doesn't mean l will. I been rockin since 94.
Why should anyone have to prove anything to YOU! If you claim l took someone's music you should swiftly kick my arse.

This is Big Bank Hank, jacking Grandmaster Caz lyrics for Rappers Delight. If the next challenge is MILLI VANILLI then Danoc is going to win. "BLAME IT ON THE RAIN"!

Actually Big Hank didn't steal those lyrics from Caz if you know the real story. But l digress.

The pianist is amazing, his control, timing, feel, and accuracy is +1000. Mastery level for sure, you can see the easy in which he plays. His max effort appears effortless.

That isn't even the pianist's final form...

CharlesRandolph wrote:Cockdiesel and Near Tao: Your tracks not really touching genre, but I do hear an improvement
every challenge and that's what counts. Electro funk is really dancer driven, the music needs to make people get out there and jam. Bboys and Bgirls can but they really don't dance to this. It's more a popper, robot, strutter, style of music. Near Tao, you have the idea on paper, I just would like to hear that translated in the music. You're all cerebral, we need more freestyle and FUNK!

Yeah super fair. My first iteration of the track was more in the funk space... I was off recording lines alongside a couple songs to help get the feel and groove. When I had to scrap it and start over I got lost more in the Kraftwerk mind-space... which for better or worse... lead me in this direction :D

Cockdiesel wrote:tao- I like that your style shines through between the different genres. You seem so calculated in your description, yet your vibe is more of an organized chaos (in my mind), thats not a negative. just very far from the way I organize my ideas. I dig your avant guard style.

I'd be curious what you consider my style to be if you don't mind taking a few minutes to put it down on paper. I feel like I take a pretty different approach when I start tracks, but am interested to see what the themes are that I am subconsciously expressing without realizing it. I probably have a comfort zone that I don't realize.

Don't you mean YOU wanna see and not WE? No one else has a problem with my production.

I can do that. Im out and about, please don't rush me either, l got you on that no problem.

Peace

CharlesRandolph wrote:EDIT: DANOC upload the midi files and audio stems so we can verify that you produced it. No two tracks!

Tao- it’s really the energy and sound. I think most of “our sound” carries through from each track we do. It’s more of starting to hear the beat and being like yup that’s definitely Tao.

Thanks for the feedback from everyone else. Like I mentioned before I spent like to no time on it and it’s really just how I begin a track make a simple drum beat at the tempo and find the right patches and melodies. I just never got beyond the basic loop point.
By CharlesRandolph Sat Aug 15, 2020 4:58 pm
Hey you're right, there is no need to submit anything.

Here's some more key groups for the fiends who are looking for them :D

These were all from the "Robot Love - Logic Test" track that's in the list out there... run through the guitar effects that kind of crushed the sound. For posterity though... here's what I was originally going for (but too muddied up)...

NT Mg Bass-Sickle - First up... here's a bass sound I recorded off of my Moog Voyager. My initial thought was to create something that was not an 808, but could bounce through the track. While I like this Bass sound, it also isn't the 808 that I think you need on an Electro Funk track. It still funks though.

NT Mg Sawtooth - Next up... this is a pretty straight up Sawtooth synth patch on the Moog Voyager, it does pretty well cutting through the track.

NT Mg Smooth n Slow - I mean... this is pretty smooth. I dig this sound and hopefully you will too.

NT Mg Blazed - The Blazed sound is probably my least favorite out of the box, and it probably needs a bit more filtering to be tamed. I wanted to do something with the high end... and if you listen to my track you'll probably hear where it wasn't working so great.

NT Old School Cool Drums - These drums come courtesy of the PO-32 Tonic. I was trying to recreate some of those harsh drum machine sounds, and I do like the drums here, unfortunately in the track that I posted above you cannot really hear the drums because the track got too muddied.

Anyway, good luck and have some fun with these sounds!
