I have been using the auto-sampler in the MPC software. I was skeptical, but it's really, really useful!
To audition an external synth, I have the midi input set to my midi keyboard, and the midi out set to the external synth, which is connected to my computer via USB.
In the midi preferences the only input I have with a lit up button is the controller keyboard as master. It shows the external synth, but I don't have that set to anything - which I fully expected to mean it would not accept any midi input from that external synth.
But every time I change the patch on the external synth, the sequence in the software changes, and gone are the midi settings I had previously set up, so no sound comes out. It's really irritating that I can't find a really simple preference to prevent all CC and program change data from an external source.
I ensured that my midi instrument is not armed, has nothing set for monitoring, it should only accept input from the keyboard I have selected. But it's not the midi instrument that is the problem, the entire software is accepting program change data from anything connected. It's the sequence that changes - blargh!
