MPC One MPC Live

So i sold my Live and bought the One.
I had the Live since a few weeks after it came out. I liked it alot, really like the menu+pad short cuts.
The X was never on my radar as i was moving around alot and had the Live in my backpack, use to spend hours in the woods by myself and live and something to eat drink and smoke, it was great.
After a while i noticed that i use the MPC in a specific way. I was jumping between program edit, sample edit sampler, grid, pad perform, track and pad mute, and i turn TC on and off, and some other stuff as well.
The One came out and i was not impressed by the lack of phone input and the lack of adding a ssd, and the battery, but thats an easy fix. With the live a could have my turntable and my Roland RD connected without a mixer at the sametime, on the one that´s not possible without a mixer(looking at the SSL six)
So i keept the live, the mk2 came out. but with the one having more shortcuts buttons, i keept my live mk1.
Then i bought the One, and must say i like it alot, smaller pads are nothing to writte about. But all the shortcut buttons makes the MPC experience much better for me. If i could go up and down with buttons i dont think there would be much screen play at all. the fact that there is no coating on it like the live is so much better for me. Going from soft buttons to click buttons was also for the better.
Maybe it´s my mind playin tricks on me, but i feels like the output is a little louder. The data dial is alot sturdier, not as much wobble as on the live. The touch screen feels about the same. I dont like that the SD card and headphone jack on the front, would rather have them in the back with the rest of the I/O, and the volume knob on top like the live mk2, but it is what it is. All in all i do like the One better then the Live mk1, but there are some part of the live that is better then the One.

Cool.. What genre of music are you doing on your One (and previously, your Live)?

Same here I have a Live 1 and 2 and spend a lot of time jumping from sample edit and program edit.

I like the extra buttons on the one but I don’t think I could live without an ssd and lack of drive mounting back to the pc/Mac

I´m a trio. Drums, bass and rhodes/piano.
I like jazz music with a nice beat. I used to writte rhymes back in the days, but now i let the instruments "spit" the verse. If that makes sense.
Hip hop/funk/chill, even when i up the tempo still cool jazz, well, sometimes i go hardbop.

Yes the SSD was very convenient, but i never use the software unless i make a keygroup with alot of samples.
One thing i noticed is, i don´t have to connect the MPC to the computer anymore, i just eject the SD card and plug it into the computer. It´s actually easier now, with the Live i was never abel to eject the MPC, got the message- It´s in use, close the application bla bla bla. Maybe a user error, but i had to shut down the computer first then go back to standalone.
I build my own keygroups out of vinyl samples. i Use Izotope RX5 to clean up(if the record is to messed up) and seperate the notes from each other. An example, i sampled a clarinet from The call with Henry Grimes(For django), the clarinet sounds like it´s crying, sound so nice. But when Perry goes from one note to another the notes kind of overlap, so i separate them to get nice samples, i get round robins and notes to cover enough of the register(depending on the sample) to be abel to use it as a real instrument. some samples take time, but this is alot of fun.
Allways on the hunt for another trumpet.

Hey I'm glad to hear this. I'm going to get a MPC One as soon as they come in stock on sweetwater.com. It looks dope and I'm looking forward to being able to make beats at my mother in laws house, or on break at work (when we go back to the office after COVID), or if I get a battery I could go to the beach or something. The Live 2 is dope because it has a Lithium battery but it's not worth double the cost of the One just to have that. I'll figure some other solution out. Anyway peace.

The Live 2 is not double the cost of the MPC One. That said, it's not just the battery - it's the option of having an integrated SSD into the box, the ability to use properly as a connected device to transfer data between your computer and your MPC (the One does not do this), the Ableton Live control, Bluetooth and Wifi, and of course - that fantastic speaker that everyone seems to love.

Funny, I just traded my one for a live MK1.

Honestly, it feels way more like an instrument then the one. Just having the touchscreen right next to the pads is such a game hanger when playing it.

Agree.

Going into standalone to transfer files back and forth, is good for when your done. But it's a waste of time having to go into controller mode just to transfer sounds back and forth. Also, moving the SD card or flash drive back and forth to transfer sounds is pretty archaic. By today's computer networking standards.

The issue is that none of these MPC, can connect to a computer while being in stand alone. It's one or the other, which shows a serious disconnect. How it should be: Plug USB cable into the computer. From there I can transfer sounds and use the MPC Software all while in standalone. Imagine adding the MPC to a network, which allowing us to pull and save files to any computer on network. "I wonder if computer can do that?"

The MPC 4000 and Ak Sys can do that, minus the direct networking part. But I created a work around for that.

Right, totally agree. I picked up a One for my buddy to try and get him back into production - he loves it, but when I bring my Live 2 over and set them down side-by-side, I just can't get used to the screen being where it's at. Makes the screen feel smaller, too.

Don't get me wrong - there are things I like about the One, but the Live 2 just works better for me.
