MPC Live battery dead

Hi folks

I bought a used MPC Live a few months ago. The battery appears dead now. The unit will not turn on unless it is plugged in, and the battery charge sits at 0%.

Has anyone else encountered this, or do you have thoughts about what I need to do? Is it a case of needing a new battery? And if so, and there licensed or specific MPC techs? Would it be difficult to source a repair without a warranty?

I am not aware of anyone selling an OEM replacement internal battery - even if you could source one, it's unclear whether the battery can easily be replaced. I always assumed there would be plenty of options for battery replacement (i.e. ifixit-style guides, official replacement kits etc), but nothing seems to have materialised.

You could try emailing MPCstuff.com to see if they can advise, but I suspect this would be a job for Akai themselves. It will probably cost quite a lot and may not be economical.

You might instead consider forgoing battery power completely, or use an external portable 19v battery, there's plenty of recommendations out there which work for all the current MPCs and the Akai Force, try a search here and in Google for the recommended models off Amazon.

Akai has a battery replacement service, you have to call them though. They have been super unresponsive lately.

Crack that thing open and make sure the Battery connector hasn't become disconnected.

another thing....Does the Battery Charge Light illuminate when plugged in? Does it show "Charging" on the LCD when plugged in?

I don't know how much you paid for your used Live (MK1), but a replacement battery alone costs north of $260. That's assuming YOU do the work of opening your Live up and replacing it. On an aside, this is why I sold my Mk1 and bought the Live 2 - I didn't want to have to struggle with a battery replacement anytime soon.

Thanks for the info everyone. I wrote to Akai a week ago, but have had no response.

The battery charge light doesn't come on - it sits on 0% with a (!) icon rather than the lightening icon.

That's the issue with buying second hand MPC LIVE. If the battery hasn't been certified tested, it's always best to message them and request a lower price. Shame there isn't a documented, lower cost battery replacement. I say give it a year and more will pop up, because these batteries will start failing.

If you bought your Live second hand, it's not covered by Akai so plan to pay 100% of the battery replacement cost.

That battery looks like a rc car battery. That thing shouldn’t be over 100.00 I say just open the damn thing up and see if you an get some numbers off the thing and start searching China sites,. Also maybe try unhooking it and rehooking it up, then see if it changes... but yea, try and get some info off the battery, find out everything you can about it and you may find a very reasonable priced replacement for it.

I just bought a new MPC Live 2 and after 30 minutes of use, and the battery no longer charges. It will work only when plugged into an electrical outlet. I've e-mailed AKAI but I will probably end up returning it. Sounds like it may be a similar issue.

Akai Pro needs to start paying people on here for TECH SUPPORT.

Return it immediately and get a new one. It’s a bum battery (or other hardware). Looks like Live 2 manufacturing QA was lax during the pandemic.
