Might be a bit of a silly question but a lot of peeps talk about zoning when discussing the OS updates. What is it exactly?

Zoning: a function that automatically chops the sample in a predetermined number of slices and assigns them to the pads. Depending on how it is implemented can be very useful or s-h-i-t-t-y.

Zoning gives you the ability to actually chop your samples directly in the mpc. The following is a quote from the 2000xl manual:
ZONE mode
The ZONE mode allows you to divide a sample into a number of equal parts (from 1 to 16). This
could be useful, for example, if a 2 bar sample has 4 beats to a bar: dividing the sample into 8
would give you 8 zones of 1 beat each.

oh of course. the whole beef was stupid and a waste of time. both men are amazingly talented - elp maybe slightly more so because he's a producer emcee.
even though i like sole MUUUCH better as an emcee and he's influenced me more, i have to give props to producer emcees because i am one.
