MPC ONE or MPC RENAISSANCE

Hello everyone,
I am looking to get into the MPC game but I am kind of stuck on which one to get. The MPC one is relatively new but relatively smaller than the renaissance, but it looks more compatible because it is newer. I was wondering what you guys thought because they are relatively around the same price.

MPC Renaissance is a controller, not a standalone machine, so you have to be tethered to your computer all the time. It's also discontinued and is not guaranteed to work with future versions of Mac/Windows. Get the MPC One, much more bang for your buck, you can always sell it if you don't like it.

MPC One, hands down. It's not even a contest.

Isn't there some stores he could try it out for 15 or 30 days and return it if he doesn't like it?

IMO the Renaissance was a mega big flop. It failed hard and isn't relevant. (MY OPINION THOUGH!).

The renaissance is actually a really good controller. I think better than the one. The qlinks and i/o options alone make me like it over the one. And it’s still supported. The one is standalone and is more current. Won’t lose either way. I’m still doing records with ren. I also have the studio black, x, and my buddy has a touch. You can do every arrangement you can think of on any of them.

It worked well for me.What exactly is bad about it?Built like a tank...

For the time period in which it came out it’s quite powerful imo. The only downsides are that the software was just too new and underdeveloped, and that the Ren couldn’t be used in standalone. But for the rest of the package...classic MPC feel, 16 Q-links to keep you away from the mouse as much ad possible, I/O with interface capabilities showed to be quite future proof since it layed the foundation for the X and Live. And it made using VST’s with your MPC so much easier. I bought the Studio when Ren/ Studio came out. And even without the Ren’s features the Studio was a clever package. It made it possible for me to access more tools more easily which was very educational for me.

It’s been a bit outdated now, and of course there were tons of things Akai could’ve done better, but to say the Ren was a complete fail is a bit of a bold statement.

This is complete bullshit, I had the Ren from 2015 to couple of months ago.
specially if connected to Mpc software 2.x the mpc Renaissance flyes, IHMO it is much better than the mpc studio and the MPC One (in controller mode).
IF you need something mainly standalone the renaissance fails for obvious reasons, otherwise if you rely on the computer for betaking I would not exclude a second hand mpc renaissance.

What makes the Ren so bad in your own opinion.

Assuming you meant Ren (and not Ten)... and I am not an owner of this unit... so no personal opinion... I suspect the biggest problem with the Ren is that it is locked to needing a computer and software for it to function... and if anything fundamental changes (OS/Drivers/USB Protocols/etc...) you are beholden to multiple hardware and software company's whims to decide to or not to support something... not just Akai.

As a very real example of this... Apple updates their OS just about yearly... which often has the habit of leaving some bit of hardware or software in the dust... and there is a large swath of manufacturers that have disappeared in that wake. My Access Virus Darkstar still functions in standalone just fine... but I can no longer use it as an audio interface... and I'll be damned if I'm going to hack drivers just to get the VSTi UI to work so that I can map controls from my DAW. At least it still works in standalone mode though... so I can map MIDI CC, play notes, whatever... but it is still doesn't remove the fact that it is still crippled as a device from when I bought it.

I found a Ren on eBay at normal price ,so I'll have both my One and hopefully a working Ren soon ,side by side for workflow comparison
Main reason was that I was not impressed by the build quality of the One (screen,pads,headphone jack, even the USB port almost broke) and the One doesn't feel as a snappy standalone device.
PS. I know that One is standalone and Ren just a controller
