Any reason not to buy the MPC Live 2?

What is going on people.

I used to own a MPC 1000 which I reluctantly sold a few years ago, and I have not made a track since. Miss it everyday, but I'm ready to jump back in especially with all the spare time I have now due to COVID-19. I was always interested in the MPC Live when it was first revealed, and then when the MPC One was revealed at the start of the year I was pretty set on purchasing, but the lack of I/O was a major deterrent and I like having the option to route individual through external gear. Since the MPC Live 2 has now more or less replaced the original Live, I'm pretty certain this is the MPC for me. And I intend to use the unit in standalone only.

Are there any noticeable flaws in operational design or OS bugs people are reporting that may be a deal breaker? Any serious issues I should be aware of before pulling the trigger?

Lots of bugs ATM in 2.8.x, have a look around this forum for the details, no doubt they'll fix at least some of them at some point. But generally, yes, the MPC Live 2 is a good machine but the MPC One is better value for money. But if you need the extra features, then the Live 2 is the one to go for.

I may be biased because I have had the MPC Touch, the MPC Live, and now own the Live 2. I also picked up an MPC One but ended up gifting it and didn’t spend a lot of time on it.

So yeah - the Live 2 is absolutely worth it. As for bugs or operational issues, none have been deal breakers for me. It’s not crashing or locking up or anything. Build quality is super solid, and its mobility is unmatched (if you like sitting in a park or on a beach, etc to create, it’s a blast). The built-in battery also acts as a built-in UPS, so if your local power supply infrastructure is bad, or you’re creating during a sudden power outage, you’ll never lose your work.

I can’t recommend the Live 2 enough. Brilliant piece of hardware.

Unless you're dead set on MPC, then Live Mk2 is a great choice

Yeah I have never been interested in the NI Machine range, although I appreciate their existence. I'm surprised they have only now released a stand-alone version of their hardware.

Nice little stash you have accumulated there. The portability isn't a big deal for me, but the fact that it will serve its purpose as a UPS is definitely a plus. Like if I was to actually perform with the unit live, there is no way I would only rely on the battery alone.

What constitutes a deal breaker for you in terms of bugs and/or operational issues? And what have you discovered so far?

The MPC One actually looks great for what it is, but there are questionable design choices on the unit implemented by Akai Pro that annoy me i.e. 2x IN 2x OUT, USB 2.0, volume & record trim on the rear of the unit.
I'll be interested to see how the MPC range evolves from here, and I wouldn't be surprised if we see a MPC Two in the not too distant future.

The Live is a great machine indeed, offering a lot of new and more advanced features than the MPC1000. However, you will might miss the feel of a ‘finished OS’ when switching to the Live.

Love my Live 2, but I probably could have got by with the One or even the Live 1. I don't use speaker very much and don't have any modular synths. With that being said when our power went out it was nice being able to make some music! Not sure if that's worth the extra $600 or so though.

To be fair, you're not just paying for the speaker and built-in battery; you're also paying for the option of having a built-in SSD installed in the bottom, Ableton Live control, Bluetooth, WiFi, and proper disc access when hooked up to a computer (you can't transfer data over USB on the MPC One).

Haha that's a good point that I totally forgot about when picking units. I use Splice a lot and wanted WIFI, so I didn't have to figure out how to wire my upstairs with ethernet. And I do have a Samsung EVO 500gb installed. Thanks for reminding me lol.

So what is exactly wrong with the stock Akai OS? Is it just buggy, or are there serious flaws? I remember the JJOS was a significant overhaul of the stock Akai OS on my MPC 1000.

This is exactly why I don't see the MPC One as a serious option. When it was first revealed there was so many questionable design choices. What can be done with the Live 2 wireless capabilities (Bluetooth / WiFi)?

It really comes down your use case. How do you intend on using the machine and what other gear do you have that you'll pair with it?
