Standard procedure for adding rap to a beat once it is made?

What is the standard procedure (for the MPC 500 and earlier versions) for adding rap once the beat is made? Matching BPM, mixing etc. as would have been done in the 90s before MPC could easily sync with a computer.

Get your beat, bass, melody etc setup in song mode. Track out your song to tape (or other multi track recorder), and punch in/out vocals to a separate track.

You can add other instruments and such to additional tracks in a similar fashion. If you're really interested in this approach, read up on time code to help keep everything in time.
