confused as to the relationship between NEXT SEQ & SONG MODE

I know this sounds stupid but I am still a bit confused as to the relationship between NEXT SEQ & SONG MODE. Instead of whining about how AKAI could have made it simpler or how I miss my roland MV, I am going to be honest & just admit I need help.

I really trying to expand my arrangement game via
1] CLIP PROGRAMS
2] NEXT SEQUENCE & SONG MODE

I record my mpc & synth loops to audio clips.
I like to leave the drum machines on MIDI so I can mute/twist knobs on my drum machines on the fly.
The drum machine runs either back into the MPC or into my mixer.

The issue I am having is quickly switching between sequences.
I get using NEXT sequence to make the changes via pad hits.
I don’t get how to record the sequence changes to a song.
Do I hit the record button while in NS mode or while in SONG MODE ?
I see the delete/insert options in SONG MODE but what if I just want to record what I do on the fly?

I imagine the new AKAI FORCE ARRANGER is the best way to do this, but I really dig the MPC LIVE & want to make it my all-in-1 DAW.

PLEASE HELP,
LBJR

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will confirm, but I believe these are 2 completely separate modes. Next sequence is what you describe, a way to trigger sequences on the fly. If you want to "record" the arrangement, you have to go into Song Mode and arrange the sequences there.

Exactly, at least that's how I see the two modes. Next Seq is for jamming out. Would be great for live use or when you've got a bunch of blocks built up and want to see how it lays out..

Song mode is more of a final destination thing. When you're done and you know what layouts you want, lay em out in Song Mode, convert your song to a new sequence, and there's your final product. I look at Next Sequence mode kinda like a sketch pad you can use without having to commit to stuff in song mode (even though there's really no committal there).

can you record live in song mode or can you only program it ?

Yep, 2 totally different modes that have nothing to do with each other.

So this is where the AKAI FORCE stands out. If you want to mix/match different clips with different tempos, its ableton grid with the new arranger allows you to move from loops to linear arrangements

The major problem I am having is tempo changes. The MPC WARP does not deal well with tempo changes in 1 long sequence, so you need multiple sequences to incorporate tempo changes & different audio clips. NEXTSEQUENCE mode makes it easy to switch sequences but this smoothness does not carry over into song mode for me.

IF you convert a song into 1 sequence, does the MPC keep the tempo changes between the sequences or do they all get the same tempo b/c its now 1 sequence ????

I'm not sure if I'm understanding correctly due to language barrier, but...

OP posted this link to a Tube Digga video, which explains the Next seq memory and how it works directly with song mode.

Also mentioned in "The Book that none shall open" pg. 284.

In the vid, you manually choose the next seq’s and that order of seq’s gets placed into song mode. So instead of ONLY song mode where you pick and choose the seq’s, next seq is where you manually while playing can choose your order.

I have always used next seq as an abrupt next seq change, not like in the vid.

In short, play your seq’s out live in next seq and that performance seq order gets placed into song mode.

I still see them as 2 diff modes, that’s just me.

That’s dope that next sequence does that. I never bothered with it since I thought it was more of a “testing sequences” option.

Learn something new everyday. I'll have to try this. Sounds more fun than arranging in Song Mode.

This is why I don't understand why, people are asking for the Force song mode. I guess RTM would be perfect for this situation.

I think some like the visuals of a timeline/arranger, they are used to being in front of a daw.

In a touch screen you’d just easily be able to drag and drop blocks. It might also cut down on menu diving.

idk man, something better to help work is always welcome, but, I’m fine with the here and now.

It's just odd to hear some talk about getting away from Software DAW and desktop/laptop computer. Only to keep requesting features that are best used on Software DAW and a larger desktop/laptop screen. Visual is fine when it comes to meters, but it's slower than using our ears and sense of touch.

This is one reason people can't match bpm by ear, mix by ear, find the key of the song by ear, chop samples by ears, play by ear, and other music based skills that are lost, when gear becomes automated.
