Midi start message not working

I have a 3 switch logidy umi3. I programmed one switch to send MIDI start and another one to send MIDI stop. The midi stop will work on my MPC one but not the midi start. I see the start message show up in midi monitor too.

I have an Arturia Keystep that integrates perfectly with it. The start and stop buttons on the Keystep trigger the MPC one. I send the exact same midi messages from the logidy as the keystep but they just don't seem to register. The only difference I can think of is that the Keystep has a clock signal that gets sent also.

Anyone experienced something like this before? Is there maybe a cc command I can send instead?

What does the start message say? Is it just "start"?

The Keystep can send MMC and CC simultaneously. I don't think the Logidy can do that.

Perhaps. You could test this theory out by stopping your Keystep from sending clock?

Good idea not sending the clock signal from the keystep. The keystep sends the same CC and midi start/stop messages but the MPC doesn't respond unless the clock signal is sent too. It's the clock signal that makes the difference .

I'm confident you can get it to work the way you want. What are your midi sync settings on your MPC?

I can only program the UMI3 to send standard MIDI messages (CC, PC, MMC, etc). So I can't send these custom MIDI messages.... Really frustrating. Not sure why Akai wouldn't standardize their product.

By definition system exclusive messages are going to be unique for each device.

You just need a midi controller that can send Sysex messages. The UMi3 can send realtime sysex (Start Stop Continue), but it can't send custom strings.

The real question is "where's the complete list of sysex commands that the mpc will respond to?".
