a virtual analog synth such as a ms2000, microkorg, alesis ion and microion. u can also filter samples for basslines. do a search on this site for
low + end + theroy

I get alot of my basslines from woodwind and brass insturments, just use the low end theory.

you can generate the most simple of bass tones using most popular sound editors. ie soundforge/cooledit

what exactly do you filter out and what do you leave ( freq's)

yeah dual filters are your freind...something with resonance on both high pass and low pass...that way you can filter the top out- perhaps make a little resonance notch for low-mid audiblitiy and then high pass at say around 80-100hz or lower and crank the res up- that way you have clear tuned bass without the flab....
