Support and discussion for all of Akai’s modern standalone MPCs including the MPC X / X SE, MPC Live 1, 2 & 3, MPC One / One+, MPC Key 37/61.

The main issue I found is not with the pad, but with the MPC's sample engine itself. If you get something like Steven Slate drums, you'll get 12 to 24 layers of drums per pad. While the MPC in 2020. still only offers 4 layers. So no matter how much the player dials in the setting, they're still limited by the functionality of sample engine.

So Akai Pro needs to increase the amount of velocity layers to at least 8 per pad. This way the sound we hear and the technique used will match. This is what the player is up against, when trying to get their drums to have that right feel, swing, and sound. Well.... that and a lack of practice, which is something we all need.

Thanks! This reminded me that I bought his tutorial package a few years ago and never got into it at the time (didn't have the right controller).

I just dug it out and set up an MPC program to use with it (he suggests a vertically mirrored setup, so A01 and A04 are both kicks, A02 and A03 closed hat, A05/08 snares, A06/07 open hat etc etc). Personally this works much better for me than a standard layout.

Now I want to set up a remapped midi program (ie change the assignments per pad) to use with vsts or hardware.

Does this still have to be done via the software, or can I remap in standalone?
