MIDI Madness: Recording Roland TR-8s and TB-03 to MPC Live 2

I'm simply trying to record my Roland gear and cannot get incoming audio...

The MIDI sync stuff is confusing and I am failing at doing this simple thing.

I saw someone mention "class compliant" MIDI... What's up with that? I don't care if it's a work around. I just need to know how to hook this up to record and why so I can understand it. I've never used MIDI and this is all new for me.

It's confusing to like what you hear in your headphones, then try to record it and get no sound just midi signals coming through. The audio track is picking up nothing and I spent the night just trying to connecting things in different combinations with no luck.

Of you use this type of gear how do you usually hook it up? I'm sure it's really simple but consuing to me because I've never done it.

Class compliant for Audio/Midi means that the device can operate as a generic device over USB. You can forget it for the time being... but it may be helpful for you in the future.

I suspect that you are also confusing audio signals and midi signals. Midi is not audio... it only contains the information about button presses, knob changes, program changes, etc... it is not the audio itself.

To get the audio into your MPC you need to hook up your L/R outputs into the 1/2 inputs on your MPC, then from the Sampler, turn monitoring to On. If you can get that far you should be able to figure out the rest.

Yeah this is new and there is a learning curve... When I posted this I hadn't slept the night and this stuff just gets more complex if your brain doesn't work.

It would be awesome to freely control and record everything at the same time, but I get that not all gear is going to just simply make life easy like that.

You can send the Roland Tr-8S outs individually with ableton, so I will play around with that and see what I can do.

It's easy to forget that music is fun when you messing around with wires and plugs all night!

Someone also mentioned that they record to analog and resample from that--but I was trying to stay simple.

Just for comparison, I ordered a Behringer bassline, but I imagine the sound won't be tremendously different. The Roland TR-8s rocks as a drum machine. It really sounds great by itself.
