Akai S900 (S950?) Bad ram chips, how common?

What model of floppy drive did you use as replacement?

I recently replaced my Roland W-30 with a second one in better condition. So I used the floppy drive from the old one. If the internet is correct (I'm not at home to double check right now) it's a Chinon FX‑354. However pretty much any floppy drive that is from the same time period should work as long as it's not a weird, one of a kind, proprietary design that I see from time to time.

Also I'm looking for info on the original S900 drive, what is that format of drive called? It seems bigger in height and changing the drive for a classic one leaves a gap on the panel which I did hide but it's annoying

I wish we had some ebay seller selling 3D printed brackets or special gotek cases, if anyone is interested

You're not going to find the exact drive but what you want to look for is a Shugart capable floppy drive. Basically pc drives operate in ds1 mode, where as Shugart / ds0 drives (so basically any Amiga compatible floppy drive) will be compatible with the S900.

Lastly, since you have the soldering skill to repair your S-900, you can also look into modifying a newer/regular common to find PC floppy drive to operate in ds0 mode. You can google "modify floppy shugart ds0" and find a lot of diagrams of what jumper wires to run to complete this mod.

I was mainly looking for a faceplate that fits the original S900 so I can put a gotek drive and not have a gap like in this picture:

I've seen some S900 with what looks like to be a bracket to mount regular sized drives, not sure about where to get these:

For now I did DIY a flap to make it look a bit better but I'm looking for a permanent solution

Thanks for the extra info on the drives tho, there's the same compatibility issue with old Roland samplers.

Ok. I used a Chinon Drive in one of my 900 too. It is from an Amiga 2000 and it's bigger than the usual drives. Doesn't fit perfectly but much better than the small drives.
