i never leave the dollar bins. I buy junk. I have some local new mexican vinyl of spanish artists that never made it in the 70's so i get alot of cheap records that are useable.

the great thing is after a year or so if i dont want them i get rid of them.

...In Texas we have the 1/2 Price Book Store. They have old Vinyl LP's & 45's. I came up on some 45's for 35-50 cents a piece. I'm going back this week when I have more time to dig...!!

I found that if you listen for just a piece off of a scummy record that seems not to have great sample material to chop instead of loop ... you just may actually find a small nugget of gold. I had a record that I just took maybe a 2-3 second piece and was able to use it...!

Good luck in your digz..!!

Yeah, most of my records I havent even played yet. I went crazy diggin for a while and I figure I have to go through a bunch of them before I can go get more.

I also tend to tap out a record when I sample, I sample everything I like from a record, then put it in the done pile. I never do project specific sampling, not sure if I ever will.

just study different forms of music. know who you are sampling and what instruments they play and what not. once you learn about jazz, funk, soul, reggae, all that shit youll have an idea of what to expect. i know not to mess with late 70s john klemmer records because at that point in his career his melodies were sounding like kenny g. i know this bobby bland record will have some raw soulful melodies to chop up because i know who this cat is. and if you really want the good shit you gotta pay, for me id rather come home with 3 records for $20 that i know will stand the test of time in my lab then 20 records from the dollar bin that are disposable at best. just learn about the music and learn the artists and shit, as you go along new names will pop up in the credits then you check for them. thats how i do it , just gradually build up the knowledge
