this is a detilaed post i wrote in another forum, it should answer your questions
The 2xl has 2 midi outs each with as u already know each MIDI can carry 16 channels, so u hook your sound module up to one of those MIDI outs you can play different sounds on your rack at once. You "dial up: the MIDI channel but choosing the approate channel on your rack and MPC at the same time. (I think u said ur getting the 1000 , in this aspect the 2k and the 1000 are identical)
Note that the MPC has 2 MIDI outs A and B
Each can have 16 channels the default names are
For A
MIDI: 1A-device 01
MIDI: 2A device 02
Etc….
MIDI 16A device16
Your B port works in the same way expect there is a B where the A is so it would look like this
MIDI:1B-device 17 (note since A has 1-16, B starts at 17)
If I have a piano on MIDI channel 1 on my rack, i go to the track on the MPC which i want to record the MIDI data for that the piano then i set the MIDI program on that track to
MIDI:1A-device 01
SO when i play a key on my MIDI controller(which is plugged into My MPC MIDI in) That sound is triggered on my rack and i hear that piano play from my module. Note that when i record on that track, its just the MIDI data, that MPC only triggers the sound in the rack. "thats why u need a mixer to hear your sounds from your MPC and your rack(s) at the same time”.
If I have a trumpet on selected on channel 2 of my rack and i want to record a track on my MPC
I set the MPC to the track i want to record and then i select MIDI program for that track to.
MIDI: 2A device 2
Now when i play my keyboard the trumpet is played
As far as saving things,
The motif stores voices as numbers , so i usually rename the MIDI track on the MPC to correspond to that voice, for example a piano sound on the motif is in bank 1-63-0
So i will usually rename the track MIDI program on my MPC correspond to that number
Before renaming here is how it would look the piano track would look on my MPC
Tr:01-piano
S:MIDI: 1Adevice01
After I rename the program
Tr:01-piano
S:MIDI: 1A-1-63-0
So u can now save you stuff you sequence an you will have all your stuff ready to go of u need to dial it up
The Racks
with the motif ( and most modern racks) you can save all the voices you have stored on your rack also, so remember I have piano on track 1 trumpet on track 2 etc… Well I can save that as a program on my rack, I usually name it the same name as the beat on the MPC, so when I load things back up I just have to turn to the correct program on the rack, load up the correct sequence on the MPC and all the stuff that is MIDI data will be ready to go
(FYI when I save stuff on my computer I can transfer that program data from the rack to my computer for back up via USB I save the motif program in the same corresponding beat folder as my MPC program
Another thing
Formant and Big have taught me that u should always leave a MIDI port free so you can multi track, so its good to connect all your racks to MIDI port A and leave B free so u can track out to your computer(cubase protocols etc.)
If u want to hook up more then one rack to your MPC u just mute the MIDI channels on the rack that aren’t being used.
For example, im getting a fantom X rack soon so my set up will be like this
MIDI 1A-device01 to 8A device08 < motif
MIDI 9A-device09 to 16A devuce16 < fantom X
Now I mute the channel 8 threw 16 on my motif rack cause I only want fantom sounds on those channels
I mute channel 1-8 on my fantom rack casue I only want motif sounds on those channels
