I really like the speaker and have used it 90% of the time - very convenient and sounds satisfying.

So kind of a funny thing..... I made a simple beat I really like when working with the speaker. A sample, drums and the tube/bass/electro synths.

But then I plug the headphones in (HD25's - so decent heaphones) and it sound like shit

Really weedy bass, shrill highs. Just not good. I didn't even do anything to sculpt the sounds when on the speaker to make it sound good, no tweaks made. It just sounded good right off the bat.

Is there any way to compensate the overall mix to make it sound more like the on-board speaker? (more natural, fuller bass, less highs)

My random guess would be that it’s the HD25s that are the culprit. They are decent for mixing/cueing but not really linear. You should maybe compensate a bit but not too mich. Inswitch between DT770s and the speakers and they are very similar sounding. In addition try bouncing your tracks to listen to them on systems you are sonically familiar with. That should give you an idea as to what you need to take care of frequency wise.
