How to copy / paste notes that are off the grid?

Hi folks,

Imagine this: i have some percussion hits that are not tied to the grid (they were played in unquantized).

I now want to copy them and then paste a bar later.

Problem is, i can find no way to do this.

So far i can find two options:

#1: the "copy" button. This just places the pasted note starting exactly at the end point of the copied note. Totally useless, why would you ever want to do that?!

#2: shift + copy / paste: this will paste the first copied note at the playhead. But this doesn't do what i want either, as it mean i would have to move the playhead to exactly the off the grid position of the first note, but a bar later.

Of course the logical way for it to work would be to include the space between the playhead and first copied note and include this space before the first pasted note. Then you could just place the playhead at the start of bar 1, copy, move the playhead to the start of bar two and paste, and all notes would be placed in exactly the same offset position, but a bar later.

Anyroad, does anyone have any workarounds for this or in fact is there a way to easily do what i need to do?

The only workaround i found so far is to place a dummy note at the start of the first bar and copy that as well, which makes it at least possible to paste the off-grid notes a bar later, then delete the dummy notes. But there must be an easier way!

I would personally open up the Track in List Edit...Shift highlight every Note...click the Nudge Tab....Hold Shift & Roll the Jog Wheel in Quarter Note Increments

Buti don't see how this solves my problem. That only moves my original notes. I need to copy the orig notes and repeat them with the exact same timing, but a bar (or more) later (or earlier)!

COPY BARS it is, probably rhe easiest way:

In MAIN, tap the pencil next to your sequence and tap COPY / BARS. Select target sequence. Voilà!

But that copies everything in the sequence, not just my selected notes.

Arggghhhhh, why is it so clunky! This is such a basic operation!

EDIT!!!!! .. copy events (in MAIN) does it, but wow, such a long winded way of doing something so simple!

Ok, so the best workaround i can find is to always keep pad 16 free, and use that note for the dummy note at the start of the bar, then it's easy to paste stuff in the right place. Then just click on pad 16 on the left of the grid edit and delete all the dummy notes.

By the way, i just found out you can plug a computer keyboard into the USB in, so in standalone mode you can use the shift key on the keyboard for shift + select. And the delete key also works.

Wait a minute.. So with a keyboard you can use SHIFT and tap to select multiple notes in the grid or what?

Copy the notes to anywhere on the grid and then nudge them as a whole to wherever you want them off the grid..?

Sure, but if you've got notes that are not tied to the grid you need to either do it by ear or find out what the value of the first note was and make sure your pasted note also has that value (plus or minus some bars).

So, a big hassle to do something that should be easily achievable and has been standard practive in all DAWs since 1994........

I repeat, the way it should work is as follows.

When you copy some notes, the MPC also looks at where the playhead is. Imagine the playhead is 745 milliseconds before the first copied note. So, when you paste, the first pasted note will be placed 745 ms after wherever the playhead is at the moment of pasting. It baffles me that this isn't how it's implemeted.

Depending on the task at hand I usually do add a dummy note on 1.1.1.0. But I find it quicker to just copy whole bars and afterwards remove what I don‘t need. But I am used to this workflow from old times.

I may just be missing something, but isnt this just copying under the events tab under the sequence pencil icon? (I.e., the standard way to copy note events in the new OS?)

I guess it’s annoying to have to hit the home button and get out of grid edit mode to copy and paste easily, but it’s a two second issue.... and it’s not a work around. That’s just how you copy and paste notes in this machine.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding the issue...
