MPC in controller mode question

I'm a long-time MPC user, from the 3000, 2000, to the 4000 when it first came out. I liked the 4000 due to the fact that while running my programs and sequences I was able to load sounds directly to the pads via my computer while having access to the internal drive.

The ability to connect it to a computer and manipulate the sounds and send them to the pads in the 4000 made my workflow much easier.

I recently bought the MPC X and knowing what I already knew coming from the 4000, I thought these functions were still available so it was an easy choice for me over the new maschine.

However, as soon as I connected the MPC X to my computer and realized that I had to switch to "controller" mode and by doing so I would lose access to the internal drive and my programs and sequences, I realized that it was impossible to replicate the workflow from the MPC 4000 that I was used to.

Please let me know if I am missing something or if this is how it is with the mpc x because if it is, then it's the biggest disappointment for me and I may be forced to sell it and either get back to the 4000 or get the new maschine.

I hope this isn't so, but if it is, then Akai dropped the ball big time.

I would like to be able to replicate the workflow I had with the mpc 4000.

This way, I can keep the program running while testing the new sounds loaded from the computer to the pads and not from an external drive.

Well, I have the following suggestions:

1) Since you want to get files from your comouter, why not run it in controller mode anyway?

2) install a harddrive and copy the content onto that hd so you wont even have to acces your laptop when working on mpc x?

3) Use a memorycard for easy file transfer?

Yes, just run the MPC in controller mode, this will give you the desired workflow. Regarding the MPC's internal drive, do not save files to this, it's really just for storing the factory library. Instead, use a large SD card or install an SSD into the SATA port on your MPC X and transfer your entire library to this - you can even copy the factory library to this as well. Create a folder on this drive to store your projects to and create a browser shortcut to it.

The SATA drive or the SD card will also be available in controller mode, unlike the factory internal drive.

I want to be able to load sounds into the mpc via my computer while running my programs that I am working on at the moment, just like I can do with the mpc 4000.

If I need to switch to controller mode, I have to close everything and start over.

I haven't been able to load my programs into the mpc in controller mode since they were saved to the internal drive, so I need to try and see if this is possible as I don't want to work in the mpc software, otherwise, I would have kept my maschine software.

Not sure if I should go back to the 4000 or checkout maschine + as this workflow might slow things down for me.

Is there anyone working this way with mpc X? Running programs on the mpc and loading sounds via the computer?

You can’t work that way on with your MPCX. The Maschine plus also has the same workflow limitation so it won’t help you there.

Get the custom firmware and use WinSCP manager to SSH into the MPC-X for acces to the hard drive. You will even get acces to the internal storage of the MPC.

What Lamp said... if you have an SD card in the back of the MPC, or an SSD card installed. then you will see it on your computer. Then load up the MPC software and use Controller mode. You can do everything on the MPC screen like it's in standalone. The workflow is even more enhanced if you do it that way. Save to the internal harddrive and load it up in Standalone if you want. Then save and load it up in controller mode and backwards and forth. Switch all you want, but why not just run MPC Software if you're going to be hooked up to a computer and wanting to interact w/ it on the computer itself. From the MPC Live itself, I doubt you you would notice the difference between controller and standalone. If you're wanting to swtich back and forth, then don't use more the 8 Audio tracks and don't load up 3rd party VST's. You have the Workflow that Ak.Sys wanted to be ....
