i was taking a listen to nas street disciple. being a nas fan, i was listening to it all the way through. this is where i get pretty pissed...

a few months ago (may), there was a beat battle run by Shaman work. This tournament was sample themed: 1st round: bob james; 2nd round: jimi hendrix; 3rd round: the doors; 4th round: james brown.

Now, I found a cd, in may, called "James Brown's Funky Divas". It had the women that worked with james brown singing some of his songs, and other songs.

This is where i found a song by lyn collins entitled "Take Me, Just As I Am".
I had a field day with the sample, and killed it. I just knew i was gonna win the tournament. I was letting everyone i knew (even some people i didnt know) hear the beat.

Long story shorter, the battle was cancelled, and my beat didnt see the light of day.

Now, back to street disciple. "Sekou's Story"...sound familiar? The 2nd part of the song has the exact same sample as the one i used, just 1 or 2 different synths.

The original song had NEVER been thought to be sampled...yet when i decide to do so, someone else makes a beat off of it and its on a major album.

Is it just me, or has this happened and pissed off other people, too??????

peace

This happens to everyone.... the worst is when you have actually recorded a track to the beat, but a bigger artist uses it first, then you can't release your version..... but yeah, this happens a lot, that's why people stay away from bigger name artists, everyone uses thier records.

....or you gotta chop sh!t and re-arrange it in your own way (instead of just looping stuff, or sampling big chunks of records), so that it doesn't matter if someone used the same record - they won't sound the same.

It happens to everyone though on the real... Ain't nothin to sweat... It's frustrating, but it just causes you to have to dig even further...

Yes, the same thing has happened to me with old disco records I've sampled for house tracks.

If you are going to be sampling off an old record there is no way you can guarantee that at least one other person somewhere on this planet has not sampled the same thing. Even if it some old 45 from 1969 that only 200 copies were pressed up. There is still a possibility that the other 199 copies have all been found by diggers who produce.

The Lyn Collins track that issues talks about at the start of this thread is a pretty well known record. I remember two volumes of "James Brown's Funky People" compilations coming out back in around '85, plus a vinyl re-issue of her original album. That is 20 years ago for re-issues of things that were being dug for back then so a lot of people have that track, whether they have sampled it or not.

I also think that a lot of sample music works because of the familiarity of the loop, not the obscurity.

that shit happens to everyone all the time, but the worst is when you find out from another person: "yo that sounds like so and so's beat." and you like huhh? and you go and check it out and you like diggity-damn, this makin' my beat look corny now.

yeah they right tho, gotta chop them shits up. but even then, you have to do something different, add some instruments or a different sample. gotta think different give it a completely new feel, especially if the sample was already used for another beat.

Nah Black Moon was pissed cause Just Blaze used the same sample for "PSA" as they did for the original "I Gotcha Opin".
