According to rumors, this is Akai's next project.
Yeah.. I've heard mostly rumors as well. Wonder what the difference will be..?

According to the rumors they will be bringing over some of the 4000 features. I dont know which features.
Features wanted:
1. More memory (about 1 gig of memory)
2. Improved Pads
3. Improved electronics
4. MCD drive
5. CD-RW/CD-R or DVD-RW/DVD-R or CD-RW/CD-R/DVD-RW/DVD-R
6. Bigger LCD Screen
7. Standard 4, 6, or 8 outs and SPDIF/ADAT IO's with expansion capabilties
8. Rack Mountable or Akai specialized MPC rack/Stand
9. Improved Midi Implementation for use as a controller for cubase, sonar, etc. (user friendly)
10. Capable of direct PC connection via usb/Firewire for file transfers and track transfers.
These are my top 10. I can go on forever, but I don't have $10,000 to spend on an MPC.

Quite possibly NEVER. As stated above, it's all speculation right now, and I personally don't see Akai releasing a machine between the 2000XL and the 4000, especially right after releasing the 1000 (respectively speaking, timewise). I think the next MPC to be released will be the 5000 or 6000, with an interface almost identical to the 4000 with some sort of added features (not like the 4000 really NEEDS this). I say stick with the well-known. 60, 60II, 3000, 2000, or 2000XL. I can't include the 1000, because I had one for a few months and it's a TOY compared to ANY other model in the lineup. True dat. Play with a 1000 and you'll laugh your ass off at the Fisher-Price feel of the pads and OS. Annoyingly bad after coming from a 60II. Maybe I'm just jaded, but a hunk of basically plastic and VERY light sheet metal, along with a SERIOUSLY flawed OS make the 1000 a doorstop, not a real MPC. Granted, the 2000 and XL had problems when they came out, but the timing on the 1000 sucked azz when I had one.....been a little while, but I'd bet cash the situation hasn't changed much. Forget about a 2500. Think forward or stick with the known. At least you know the specs of a 2000XL, 3000 or 60, etc.....the 2500 will not see shipment. I can pretty much guarantee that.
Peace,

My ideal MPC2500 would capitalize on the best features of the 60, 3000 and 2000xl, which IMHO are Sound, Speed and Simplicity. They can add all the CD burners and piano roll displays to the 4000, but the 2500 should be a superb sounding, but very basic tool, that's lightning-fast to work with. Most of the changes I'd make to the 2000XL are fairly minor, some are not. Off the top of my head, this is my dream list:
- Ability to sample (not just re-sample) at 12, 16 and (maybe) 24 bit. Different 'quality' settings for each bitrate, so that it can sound like an SP1200 or a 60 at 12bit, and a 3000 at 16bit.
- A faster processor. Timestretch and re-sampling could be a million times faster these days, as could waveform drawing in the 'trim' page.
- Ability to sample the inputs and outputs while a sequence is running. This would allow you to sample something like a scratch in the context of a track, without external gear. Plus it would allow you to sample synth stuff that is being sequenced by the MPC, and you could run a loop through an external processor and sample it back to the MPC.
- Realtime knobs for attack, decay, tune, cutoff and resonance. These could be some Nord Lead 3 - style rotary encoders. Push-and-turn encoders or a dedicated, latched shift button could give these knobs dual functions - like attack/decay, cutoff/resonance, tune/finetune (and mabye FX1send/FX2send). Just imagine banging a pad and reaching for a knob to adjust one of these parameters, without having to go to the program page and finding the right field. Aaah...
- Normal midi mapping of the pads: up chromatically from A1 to D16, with the ability to shift up or down by an octave or two.
- Ability to play samples chromatically from a midi keyboard.
- Ability to switch from any page to any other, like from Mix to Track
Mute without having to go through Main Window.
- All pads active in trim page. Makes it much faster to find the sample you want to trim. Why have all pads play the same sample anyway?
- Adjust start/end points while sequence is running.
- Adjust swing parameters while sequence is running.
- ReCycle feature; adjust threshold until you have the zones you want, and hit 'chop'.
- Additional filters. Some good sounding resonant filter models, and a seperate HPF for turntable rumble.
- Two realtime sliders, meaning they can change a parameter while the sample plays, so you could sweep a filter or do manual tremolo fx. Of course current non-realtime mode should be available.
- If there are 2 sliders, they should also do start/end point in trim page (I can't believe they missed that on the 1000)
- 'Merge to mono' in adittion to current 'split to mono'
- 8 outs + stereo + s/pdif as standard
- WAV or AIFF file storage (preference!)
- CF reader
- USB2
- Quicksave function - like hitting command-S on your computer. Just overwrites the entire project where it was last saved.
- The CF card should just appear as an external drive on your computer, at all times. That way you could just open a sample in your sample editor and save it, without having to transfer it to your 'puter first. The MPC should have an 'update' function that checks which samples on the card have been modified, and re-loads them into ram.
- No internal fx as standard, but an optional card that is on a par with the UAD-1 or Powercore cards for PCs (a licensing deal maybe?).
- Ability to sample (not just re-sample) at 12, 16 and (maybe) 24 bit. Different 'quality' settings for each bitrate, so that it can sound like an SP1200 or a 60 at 12bit, and a 3000 at 16bit.

I don't wait for anything from akai when you see what they did with the S 5000 / S 6000 / Z4/Z8 /Boreas .They don't wanna improve 8 years old stuff .But an os update would be really awesome for the 2kxl ( multimode filter that's the major thing i need !!)

Yeah, Akai haven't had a great track record lately. I wouldn't put any money into rack samplers these days, that's computer territory.
But MPCs are different, and they have such a huge and dedicated user base, it would be foolish not to capitalize on that to the fullest. Thousands of rack sampler users have switched to softsamplers, and for good reasons. But most MPC users wouldn't switch to computer sampling/sequencing for love or money. MPCs are different from computer sequencing, and they will appeal to many people for a long time.
I mean, how big is hiphop? And how many hiphop producers do you know who DON'T like using an MPC or SP? Sure, there are cats using logic or Ableton Live, but they're a minority. MPCs pretty much have that market cornered, and improving on the current MPC range could only solidify that position. Just look at what people are still paying for MPC60s and SP1200s. It doesn't take a genius to see that the simplicity and sound of those machines are what appeals to tons of producers, and it's been that way for 2 decades!!!! That's a very long time in music technology, and hundreds of thousends of MPC users can't be wrong. If Akai could give us something that would snatch away a little of the market share that these second hand machines hold right now, it would be good for us and good for them.
There is obviously a market for the flagship, do-it-all MPC4000, but I estimate the market for something like a 60, 3000 and 2000xl rolled into one is much bigger. Throw in a dash of SP1200 and you have a dream machine for hiphop and many other styles.
If only the Akai R&D team would check these boards once in a while....

lo-fi that is so on point it makes my nuts ache. trouble is i dont think any of it will happen. manufacturers are smoking crack, they have to be with the bizarre decisions they make. or maybe we just love to froth over obsolete gear BECAUSE we know it's not made anymore.
i'm not sure anything will ever sound like an mpc60 than an mpc60, same for sp1200, tr808 etc etc. those joints were over-engineered in a different era, now it's all plastic junk and marketing deadlines, leaving us with fisher price garbation like the mpc1000.
i think the likeliest action might come from the small companies, in the same way that you can get mad custom analog synths and sequencers it's surely only a matter of time before someone builds a simplified sp1200/mpc clone with the fat filters and DACS...it would have to be an enthusiast...a head...someone who knows pete rock is a producer, not something you smoke

Whoa, the 2000 doesn't have echo send? I guess the internal effects replaced it digitally. Still, I love the echo send feature, but I can't say that it is more valuable than internal effects, you can basically do the same with a decent mixer.
