When digging for drums...

When you are listening through your collection of records for drums, do you listen to EVERY one? Or just ones you think/know have drums?

I was just thinking about the fact that I have one drum kit that I made and the pads aren't even filled up on it. And that I tend to use the same two or three kicks and snares on everything I do.

This needs to change. So any tips on going through my own shit for some drums? Just search through it all and good luck? I guess I will end up doing that anyway.

check your rock records for big open drums. prelude by deodato on cti is really common and has a classic drum loop for chopping on it..

ive had luck with soul man, im finding a lot of breaks. but if ou just want open hit then rock, but i dunno, something about that rock snare i dont like. man love the hats though

I usually just skim through the records when looking for drums. A lot of times the intro to the song will have some open drums. Then I'll needle drop a little on the rest of the song. Also, I come across a lot of drums when I'm making beats... in the sampling process I'll hear a drum and save it to my drum folder right away.

Also, check out the Paul Nice drum records. Each one has about 20 drum breaks that ready to be chopped up.

Dude....I can put you on to mad breaks....I'll figure out which records they are...but right now I can only think of the artists.....heres one Anita Baker:rapture.....pretty tight....I'll drop you a list of like ten different records with some nice breaks..later this week

HAHAHA. I was at the Salvation Army yesterday and passed that record up. Oh my god I need to go back there right now and pick it up.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. I'm on a mission to listen to every record I have, except classical shit and things that obviously won't have drums, looking for open hits. I started with the rock ones and found some that I had passed up before.

A good source is Drummer records like Ginger Baker,Buddy Rich,etc..Always something on records like that.

I get drums off everything from jazz to psychadelic to rock. I really like drums already layered with a strike or bass-hit. good names that arent super duty tough work to find...

i usually check the beginning and end of a song to grab solo drums, intros and outros etc. of course funk records tend have the "break" in the middle as well. rock and "entertainer" records usually have some good open drums as well, like Tom Jones albums and stuff.

I Allways search after one shot drums on records in the beginning on an soul track .

anybody use chopped up kicks with a hat beneath it?

a snare u can always chop with a hat under it but a kick ..

What I Like 2 Do Is Use Certain Low Toms or Timpani with Kicks I Jus Lowpass them ALOT ..........................

Word.....layering highs with your kicks is definitely a nice thing to do

Me personally don't listen for breaks. Cause I try to find a good kick or snare wit a instrument on top of it. Try sampling right from the middle of the song when the drummers in full stride. Just record for like three or four seconds and chop the life out of whatever you end up sampling. With this method I've found alot of hot sounds. Not only drums but other types to. Its kinda like your samplin but your but your not samplin cause your makin your own sounds out of the samples.......

THE ULTIMATE BREAKS AND BEATS COLLECTION is all the drums you need. not only for sampling but for break patterns. it's most of the classic original breaks of "hip-hop" and are still used today. i have all 25, get a couple, all of them are good.
