Clips. The perfect workflow?

What do you guys think of the clip programs? Anyone else use them? If so whats your method of creating them efficiently, I may have solved the case heh.

I came up with a nice project template that's given me some great results. I set up 4 programs, then midi mapped the sliders on my apc mini to control program 1 2 3 and 4's volumes. Next i created another track for my final bounced clips and routed each collumn of pads into sub 5 6 7 and 8 and mapped their volume controls to the apc mini as well. (First four sliders for segment programs, second four on clip pad collumn submixes).

So the work flow i've set up is basically create 4 segments with 4 programs bounce each program to wave then import to a clip program and create a 5th longer sequence where I can record my live performance of the clip play back. Not only has it made my target tracks more dynamic, it's also given me some really nice "live performance" friendly productions which will be a huge win when i get a second unit.

The MPC keeps surprising me the more i use it.

I record the sequences and bounce the tracks to sample. Then import to clip program, create a 5th sequence of 128 bars and press record and play the clips. (record works with clips too).

erm.. bounce each *individual track* of every sequence to wave. (or import wavs from a force project created in force mode in hakai which is a lot quicker way of recording)

When i set up the clip pad i do like the clip demos and put each instrument into its on column (up to down), and each sequence into a row (left to right).

While CLIP programs do not work the way I want them to, they are a powerful new upgrade from my old MPC1K so I won’t play I wish it had this, I wish it had that . . . . . .

Like u, I felt the need for a better controller so I dUg up my old APC40.
MIDI Mapping works but could be smoother.
The APC comes in handy for master FX and balancing levels between different beats & clips. I wish it had more sliders since they are better for levels than knobs. Chroma caps come in handy for keeping track of what different knobs/slider represent.

Borrowing from NI’s stems idea, I try to break a beat into 3-6 clips. This is tough but it is too hard to juggle 10+ tracks so you gotta merge certain sounds into 1 clip. Borrowing from NI, I try to follow a pad color scheme. The PAD Mixer is sweet b/c you can apply the FX you want just for that clip. I wish you could switch between different WARP algorithms here, using 1 warp for all your clips is so 2010.

Red clips – main Drums [mainly kicks/toms and snares/claps]
Green clips -Drums percussion
Purp clips – MPC chops/loops
Blue clips – synths [mainly analog synth bass]

5 clip beat Example:
1 [red] drums loW [mother ducker input]
2 [red] rimshots/claps & hats
3 [purple] MPC loop
4 [blue] Synth bass [mother ducker]
5 [purple] MPC adlibs


I can elaborate more if u want . . . . . .

LIKE u I follow the ableton live /PUSH convention

EACH instrument/track is a COLUMN
I try to limit myself to 3-6 tracks
Each sequence is a ROW

I screwed up being a tightwad my apc mini is hardcoded to channel 1 and is completely useless for clip launching as that stuff needs to be done from channel 10... so the launch pad is useless but i still have the cc's to play with and can map a few buttons in midi learn. Just cannot launch clips. I may have to invest in a different launch pad.

Oh, nice there are rules to this clip game son! It hadnt quite set in on me until i read it and was like "oh yeah the column is always the same type"

so you just re-sample?

or use the looper for this ?

I use audio tracks with the auto punch in /out to sample my external gear.

For my internal MPC chops/loops, click on the “tool icon” and bounce to sample

just resample. looper is too much effort for me. Yes i have a 16 channel rack mixer plugged into the mpc and a bunch of stuff plugged into the mixer. Not always in use though, generally one item at a time. I just record audio tracks for those channels if used.
