Techniques on How to Improve Sound Quality of Bass Note

Im looking for some tips/education on how to improve the sound quality of a bass note one shot. I will not be using the note in a key group program. The note sounds good to begin with but I know there must be ways to tweak it to make pop even better.

You might as well be asking how to tune up your car, without telling us anything about your car, context matters.

Punching up a sound sometimes means adding something, and sometimes it means removing something. Other times it might just be making it more sonically interesting. Unfortunately we have no idea how your bass sound sits in your mix with other instruments, do you just want a bass sound that demos incredibly well by itself but probably doesn't sit within a mix... we have no idea.

If you've got some examples that you can post on soundcloud or YouTube or wherever, or can better describe the outcome you are looking for in more objective terms I am sure we can help you.

What did you try already?

I suggest Turn Off Loop Lock on the Sample. Zero Snap it. Set a good loop point. Set the Loop to the Back n Forth type loop. Set the sample in the program to Note On. On the LFO Modulation Tab, set it to POLY. And 16 Level the Pad and Get Funky.

I would throw that same sample on another Track in a Keygroup. Go into Q-Link Edit, Program Tab(at bottom), click Program at top, Adjust the Parameter to Portamento. And Play with the Q-Link. That should Give you some Inspiration

I'm assuming you want to add some harmonics to make the bass stand out more in the mix, since that's usually what I find myself striving for. Here's what's worked for me: Add insert FX: Distortion Grimey generally less than 20 wet/dry, focus on "width" and "center" set to your liking. Also the Akai vers of "Frequency Shifter" key parameters are frequency and async with wet/dry set pretty low. Phaser and some lo-fi FX help too. Also compression, especially mother ducker. Finally, I always put bass hits in the same mute group, so they don't overlap.

I have 3 main types of basslines.

1] bass loop straight from another song

2] a chop that I arrange like a bassline.
MPC filters & proper EQ are key here

3] synth bass from a real analog synth
Thus I almost never use keygroup programs
I highly rec getting a cheap analog synth, if u just want a quick monophonic bassline. You can spend all day programming distortion/detuning, portamento OR just turn a dial on the right synth. Get 2 cheap synths & keep the 1 that works for u.

Use a monosynth! Bass is a one note one string at a time melodic instrument. Also mono in terms of channels. Phase cancellation is whack, so to keep it fat, mono errythang.

Poly for your leads and melody, but you keep that bass mono so it slaaaaams regardless of sound system.

I'm recommending a Korg monologue for bass purposes.

For Acoustic/Upright/Double Bass: Try a dry room simulator, tilt EQ, microphone modeler, and preamp, for your insert and on your submix a vintage channel strip preferably a Neve or API model and the choice is yours for your returns.

For Electric Bass: Try a direct preamp followed by a solid-state or tube amp, on your insert, again on your submix a vintage channel strip, any model will do, and once again the choice is yours for what you want on your returns.

For Synth Bass: A simple preamp on the insert and on the submix an SSL or API is best. Again the return is your choice.

Keep in mind these suggestions are based on the limitations of the MPC's mixer.

If you go to a more fully-featured DAW for mixing then that's a bigger and deeper conversation.

Also, I can't believe I forgot to mention it... AIR ENHANCER!! It's an easy effect to overlook, but it's like salt, a little bit can bring out the flavor in whatever you add it to. Add as an insert, and tweak the freq control.
