Hype has real gems drowned into a huge library of overproduced and full of effects presets.
If you take time, try them switching off reverbs and delays and modulations and limiter, tweak oscillators balance and filter to your taste, save your presets on user folder, it can be a great preset machine, something close enough to a rompler.
I ended up with a beautiful grand piano (maybe ported from Air mini grand, which is one of the best real piano on Pro Tools), EP (maybe ported from Air Velvet), excellent rich strings, perfect vibraphone and mallets and chimes of any kind, juno-style analog pads, very useful basic basses, Gong-style drones and more.
It is replacing my 707 that I will sell because I bought it months ago for those sounds and Hype raw user presets stand the comparison with 707.
The only mistake, if it's a mistake, is this huge library and the delay/reverbs/modulations always hiding the original strength of raw oscillators.

Do you own Zenology with the 707? If so I recommend against selling it. It has pretty much all the best Roland sounds from history in Zenology, all completely editable. Depends what genre of music you make, I make d&b and it's peeerfect for lush pads, real instruments etc

No, one of the reason I am going out from Roland is this Zenology, I am interested in standalones and I am not going to have to use a computer for synth editing.
707 has a good editor, but it's not very easy to edit with this display.
And browser is a disaster, no subfolders, no user folder for edited synths, it's just bad and uncomfortable.
707 could be a good groovebox but too many limitations and a bad work organization.
Synth tones are nice though but I think with Hype and Odyssey, I am covered.
And also 707 is too big so I am happy to free space on table and work with Mpc big display for synths.
I am also considering to sell my Microfreak, now that we have granular fx, stutter, halftime, we can more or less reach the same sounds on Mpc.

I suppose YMMV. Myself, I don't mind the metric ton of effects that the presets are buried under. That said, if you're putting together your own preset library that is, in your opinion, improvements, have you considered sharing them? Any user should be able to open them on their MPC (or Force). :)

If you are wanting a ep why not use the ep plug in that is actually modelled on a real ep? I think the ep plug in is the most slept on of the bunch!! I love it!!

Because I prefer the EP on Hype.
Eletric is good for me to make percussive pitched sounds, it shines on that.

Hi friends.

After finally having spent some time with the Hype synth in the MPC I strongly recommend to look for the "init presets" folder!
There you can choose the oscillators (samples/ fm/ wavetable/ analog). The fun begins here :)
Therefore I started to edit the normal "default" preset which isn´t really default.

found the initial presets to be trash so that let me know the synth is mostly hyped wid fx.

cos if the basic oscillators sound thing and not with pleasant overtones then u gonna have to more work to create sounds with a pleasing tone.

I would certainly say the Roland 707 had better sounds selections and tonal quality then hype.

Not knowing the 707 I can´t judge that oscillators.
The inits are meant to be inits as a startingpoint. So I can hype them however I want with the fx.
I originally wanted to tell everyone that in the inits is the key for choosing the different oscillator types :smoker:
And the most important thing: I like the Hype-sound :)

it does sound good in isolation but i have not yet really worked its sound into any of my beats despite turning off the fx so; something about it is not right but it may be more to do with the type of sound I am going for.

but its a step in the right direction i am looking forward to some new soundpack expansions for hype and all the other instruments and of course invite future instruments, cos I think a rompler like ravity would fit perfect on the mpc live

Well yeah, obviously 707 has 3000 tones to choose from and edit, and they come from Roland legacy so they are definitely very good.
But at the end, if you use more sampled real instruments like EP, pianos, mallets, vibraphone and organs, Hype has those sounds at a good quality also, as I said, hidden inside a huge library of overproduced and full of fx presets.
It makes sense to save space and money and just use Hype for those sounds, I find them good and very useable.
Then a real rompler on Mpc would be very welcomed for sure.

Re: EP, pianos, etc.

It seems to have a total of

FIVE (5)

voices of polyphony.

Maybe there's something I don't know about pianos, or you found a way to increase the voice count? A five-voice piano is somewhere between pathetic and ridiculous.

Sometimes 5 notes polyphony could be enough to put some single notes or chords.
You can also run two indipendent instances and split chords and single notes, so you have 10 notes polyphony.
Same for all the other instruments on Hype.
I am not going to use an Mpc as a full piano anyway, as I don't use a 707 as a full piano anyway, for that I would get a digital/electric real one or a minigrand on protools.
And Hype real piano sounds much better then 707 real piano, which is not good.
707 has 2 or 3 nice EP but many are just fake EP of the 80s that sound dated and artificial.
Hype has some nice EP, especially if you put a tremolo on it.
Come on, it's a groovebox, compromises are always required and the same is for an Mpc and a Mc707 (which also has polyphony limits).
