LOL i finally did it. I knew it was only a matter of time until I deleted (not to be confused with formatted) it on accident. Every single file and folder and guess what happened? Nothing! Now, I'm not promoting the idea of going ahead and doing that, it's lunacy why would anyone intentionally delete that content? Ultimately I wasnt worried and rather curious about it's effect on the software. Instead of crippling itself, it repopulated the directories when the program restarted.

I have back ups and its and easy restore but it turns out that deleting the folders in acvs-content actually has no effect on the operation of the MPC software and it actually warns you that the "demos and templates" are missing.

So there must be something worse happening to peoples MPC's when they intentionally delete the stock expansions. I wonder what deeper magic is happening when peoples units take a dive.

Another possibility is that Akai has taken steps in the later firmwares to auto-fix issues when you delete that directory. All I can say is that during the older firmware versions, Akai tech support point blank stated that deleting or removing any factory content or files can cause stability issues and buggy behavior. But lately they don't seem to offer the image restore file to people who claim they need it, so maybe the latest firmwares make the procedure an anachronism that is no longer needed? Just shooting ideas here.

That thought had crossed my mind as well. I need some links to the older firmwares. Are those considered piracy here? If not does anyone got a list?

I deleted all onboard sounds not long after the X was released, and have never had any issues with it.. Just the initial "missing template" thingy, but I turned that off to start up with the sequencer main screen as I won't be using any of those demos or templates any way, and would just load up my own setups if I wanted that.

I initially deleted the sounds to gain some more space for my own projects and sounds (and ironically, most consisting of older Akai sound libraries, mostly drum hits which I think sounds better)

However, after I installed an (I think) it was 2 or 4 Tb hard drive, I might as well have kept those sounds for the mere sake of keeping it vanilla, even if I wouldn't use them.

But even if nothing happened, it's still right of Akai to recommend not doing any such thing, because you just won't know how it would affect stuff.

If you were saving to the direct storage , how were you backing up your projects?

Not sure I get the question, but I don't do any additional back ups to have duplicates to be safe, if that's what you mean..

I have one project folder on the MPC's own storage which I no longer use to save projects at, and then I have a project folder on the hard drive I installed that I save anything new on..

However, if I wanted to do backups on newer projects or sounds or whatever else I have created on the MPC, I'd just hook the mpc up with the computer and do drag/drops onto the computer or some external hard drive that is also hooked up to the computer.. And at least before the latest update, you could access installed hard drives by putting the mpc in controller mode.. My MPC then gets stuck looking for the computer, but the computer still sees it as a USB hard drive that has hair been plugged in.

Nolormally I just drag new sounds onto the MPC, but I can see myself backing up the entire projects folder on the MPC onto the computer or some external hard drive in the future once I run out of space on the MPC, maybe keep some newly started projects, and then start fresh..

But I'm not particularly worried about losing projects any more, so don't do backups for the sake of trying to not lose anything.. I work pretty fast so I just make something new..

But I do keep backups of my sounds, as these have been collected over a long time and can't simply be recreated the way you can just start a new project..

And I also sometimes rework already recorded and finished projects into something else, and use them as starting templates, change the drum patterns and sounds a bit, but save a lot of time time and can get straight into the music creating right away as I start with a full arrangement.. And then I may just save over the original because I know that the original track is now finished so it doesn't matter if it is ruined by being reworked..

And I highly recommend using a finished or almost complete project as a starting template for something new.. And if you do not want to lose the original, you just load it up and immediately save it as a new project..

And I do something similar with recorded mpc projects in Cubase.. Remove everything but the drums and then jam the keyboard to the drums and just make something new..

But now I'm going a bit off topic..

And if I wanted to do backups of what is on the MPC's own hard drive, which I can't access via USB, I'd load them up and then save them to the hard drive I installed and then access that from my computer.. Bit tedious, but think I didn't go over 30 or so projects before I installed a hard drive and saved them there instead, so would not be too painful to do backups of those if I really had to

I've seen quite a few people mention that the mpc doesn't do anything ppl want to do in controller mode anymore, there is a *new* mpc driver on the website maybe you missed? It's somewhere in the list there.
