Hi,
Is it possible to make a custom mix on headphone output on the MPC Live II?
For example having the master out + a click.

I also see that in the Channel Mixer. In the Output section it appears 4 asignable stereo outputs:
1/2
3/4
5/6
7/8

Having the hardware only 6 outputs what is the Output 7/8 for?

Thanks!

As mentioned by others a mixer is ideal for this.

However, you could send the "metronome" to some output, and audio to the same outputs, then use a proper "Y" cable that maintains your stereo image. This would kind of be like an Aux for performers.

The missing feature on the MPC is the ability to "mirror"an output. Like if you could just mirror the stereo output and send it somewhere with some tweaks; That would solve your requirement, but does not exist yet as an MPC feature.

In my case, I would love to take a copy of my kick on output 3 and duplicate an output so I can send a copy to an analyzer of some sort (i.e. oscilloscope, tuner, etc.). Currently I need to duplicate the program and set those outputs.

Send the kick to a return channel and route the return to a different output?

You cannot route backwards or sideways in the MPC, only forward routings are possible.

To me it seems like the layers are like this:
- (Layer 0 : physical inputs)
- Layer 1 : Channels / Programs
- Layer 2 : Submixes
- Layer 3 : Returns
- Layer 4 : Masters
- (Layer 5 : physical outputs)

Audio cannot be routed sideways: from layer N to the same layer N.
Audio cannot be routed backwards: from layer N to a smaller layer M where M < N.

The Mother Ducker plugin is an exception - the ducker buses can probably get stuff "backwards", but I suppose that if you route backwards or sideways, the sidechain signal will be from a past audio buffer i.e. delayed. Or maybe it's delayed always.

Unfortunately you'd have to reroute your project. So you'd probably want to make out 3/4 as your main outs now and 1/2 as your headphones / cues. Use AUX sends to route to both destinations. So track is routed to 3/4 but has send 1 as cue , which is return 1 to out 1/2.

Another way is to probably cue from 3/4 , but you'd need some sort of converter cable / Headphone amp to make it work properly.

The MPC Live has 6 separate outputs for its internal soundcard and the headphones are hardwired to output 1/2.

There is no way to "assign" headphones to anything other that output 1/2 with the internal soundcard. PERIOD.

7/8 only exists in the software because MPC X has 8 separate outputs. The LIVE/LIVE 2 does not.

You're right, it could solve part of the problem.
The sad thing is that you loose two tracks with an external mixer as good as it could be...

It's so frustrating that they did not put 8 outputs.

I've thought to use an external MIDI mixer, but the problem of headphones monitoring (aux), still stays, unless the MIDI mixer can be mapped for several programs, and the MPC is able to respond to those situations.
Actualy, as a newbee, I have no idea of the feasibility.
However, with a multi program MIDI mixer, comes another problem : faders and knobs position when changing program.
It's a puzzle :hmmm:
Each solution comes at the cost of a sacrifice. Merely because on a 8 track machine you only have 6 outputs :Sigh:
Akai engineers should stop smoking crack

Edit : Rotary encoders on midi mixer are essential...
Akai midimix and novation midi launch control xl would have been great with them.
Another shame...

How do you lose two tracks if you use an external mixer?

Also, please recognize that a "MIDI mixer" is not a mixer. It is just a control surface.

Six outputs are great. Ask any One user, who only has two. If you need more, either get an X or find a good multi-output audio interface.
