Hookin' up a zip drive to my 2000.

Brought a zip drive with a scuzzy port, to hook up to my 2000. When I go to my 2000's shift + disk and select 'device' to see if my 2000 sees it,
It does nothing but tells me to wait & that's with or without scuzzy attached, it still tells me to wait and nohing happens.

It goes to 'wait' and my 2000 crashes everytime.

I want to move on from floppy disks but I can't.

If U have had this problem and have gotten round it, pass your knowledge of how U did it, on to me, please.

Did you put in a zip and format it? Did you terminate the SCSI chain on the back of the zip drive?

Do this first:
Put in the zip, wait a sec, then choose SCSI-5 on your MPC. If it tells you nothing's there, switch to SCSI-6 and back to SCSI-5. If it's the first time you've used the disk, format it first. Always works for me.

Thanks JK for the advice and I am sure I'll put that in effect when I reach that stage.

The problem is I can't even reach the stage for it to go to SCSI - 5/6. I can't reach the stage to format a disk. It just tells me to wait and crashes every time I leave floppy to go to the other side!

What's the solution? My fellow 2000 siblings. Let me know.

I copped a zip drive several months ago and never got it to work. I have been experiencing the same f*cking problem since I got it. I select the device and it says "wait" and nothing f*cking happens. Then i gotta reboot the sh*t again. The help thread really isn't helping me. The talk about pin type connections, the wire, parallel ports is not pinpointing my problem. Do I have to send my sh*t to akai or something? I'm wondering if you can even hook up a zip drive to a non-xl. Maybe that's the problem.

i know for a fact that jaz drives work on the 2000, so i do not see why the zip wouldn't. try this. turn mpc off. make sure zip is connected and terminated and connected to the scsi 5/6 port, while the other port is set to on(termination). put your disc in. fire up the mpc and go to load. rotate to scsi 5 and hopefully it will show up. if not, try same thing with a friends zip drive. it may be the cable is f'ed up though, i don't know.

U want to explain it in laymen term?

'Zip is connected & terminated & connected'? Sounds like a contradiction and then some.

look at the back of your drive for the black jumper pin and read the instructions that came with the drrive whcih should ell you how to terminate(setup) the drive.

Why is it on the 2000 that when I selected 'device' & I try and select scuzzy and my zip drive is connected to my scuzzy port on the 2000 that it just says wait and then crashes.

This happens even without the zip drive attached. It doesn't read anything at all. Doesn't see anything to say that something needs to be connected or what is connected is acceptable. It just crashes all the time when I press shift & disk to give me option of going to floppy or zip drive.

But thanks for the advice, will act on it and see if that rectifies the problem.

This may indicate a physical problem with the MPC. The most common issue is the SCSI fuse blowing in the MPC and I do not recall it behaving this way. If I can't diagnose it given those symptoms (and I worked at a repair center), my suggestion is taking it to an Akai authorized repair center for repair.
