Private midi channels and MPC plugin in Logic.

I've been using the Audio Units version of MPC in logic and I want to use the MPC to transmit midi to another midi instrument track within logic.

The Midi Out on the MPC only contains one output labelled "DAW".

On the Mac I can see two midi channels "MPC Port one" and "MPC Public" as available inputs.

When I hit the pads it doesn't transmit any midi to logic.

What's weird is that I have midi monitor installed and running in the background and the MPC is transmitting midi on a channel called "MPC private". This port is unavailable as an input in logic.

All software and firmware is up to date.

Is there any workaround to get midi from the MPC to logic over USB while in controller mode.

You'll never be able to access that private channel, i dont know why they made it private... it doesnt have to be but all the transport controls from the touch interface and pads are routed through that private midi port in alsa so that could be why. they likely didnt want peoples controllers interfering with the built in interface.

Any of the events available from the mpc should exit it on the public port only.

Are you running your MPC in controller mode? if so you dont have to run it in controller mode to send midi events, you can actually create midi tracks and select the channels (from the window where it shows all the tracks)

Instrument plugins by design only support MIDI In and Audio Out. Since you‘re obvously on a Mac you might use IAC (see iOS‘ Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup, select MIDI window, IAC, Activate) for syncing and sending multiple MIDI ports and/or channels to/from standalone MPC Software via virtual MIDI ports, while a tool like Soundflower (unsupported since Mojave) or Blackhole (see github) could have you sending audio without the need to use actual cables.

Otherwise it‘s not possible what you want to achieve - at least not without delving deeply into Logic‘s MIDI Environment, and even that I couldn‘t guarantee to work since I didn‘t delve into that myself. At least you need to use MIDI Environment to have Logic accept single MIDI ins for different channels, and not generally work with „All MIDI ins“ per track. Sorry.

Thanks for the reply. I know you can run normal midi outs in standalone mode but then you lose access to the plugin.

Weirdly if you go into the Midi control mode while in controller mode Midi comes out the public port. It should do the same when you are routing through a midi channel on the hardware while in controller mode.

What's annoying is the capability is there, it's still transmitting all the needed information on the private channel! It just can't be accessed at system level.

The issue isn't Logic per se. It's the fact that the MPC does not transmit Midi from its own midi channel when in controller mode. At least not a public Midi channel. It does transmit on the private. Note on, Note off, velocity etc.

The private channel isn't accessible at system level so can't be routed anywhere in the DAW.
