Old Man Needs To Understand Clips

I am a much older person who is considering purchasing the One or Live II. I do not want to create beats, I only want to use existing kits or purchase kits. Which one has the most clips that I can quickly load? Are there packs available to purchase. I do

'Kits' is a pretty broad term. What kind of kits are you looking for? Kits for a specific musical genre (e.g. hip hop, boom bap, trap, house etc), acoustic drum kits, electronic drum kits, kits built from classic drum machines, multisampled instruments etc.

What do you mean when you say 'I do not want to create beats'? The MPC is primary for making beats, so what is your intended use?

Separately, 'Clips' are basically 'loops', so there are 10000000 sites out there selling wav loops which you can load into your MPC.

..or simply use your smartphone ability of recording and get creative....

But I assume you are looking for complete sets - no further work involved.

I m assuming you don't want to make your own songs on the MPC but just want to use it as an sample playback instrument. Nothing wrong with that. A tad expensive for just being a sample player. But the included fx can help you really craft your drums so there's a lot of value. Don't forgot it also has built in drum Synth so if you are into electronic drums you have unlimited possibilities.

As far as "kits" MPCs have been around for 3 1/2 decades. There is a literal cornucopia of ready made kits of varying quality. The MPC terminology for a "Kit" of samples is called a program. The MPC live comes loaded with a vast amount of programs but they spam genres so a lot of them may not be useful for you but some are fantastic.

Buying expansions is a great way to get that sound that you are looking for. There are many sources available to expand your library. The link at the top of the page will take you to https://www.mpc-samples.com. They have a load of excellent expansions for the MPC.

There is also a library of the MPC 5k floating around that IMO is a must have as it has some of the best stock drum programs from Akai.

Good question. I'm understanding your question perhaps different than others, but do you mean that you want to use the MPC like a backing band? Like you want to use pre-made clips to jam with or mix and match into performances?

Main question is if you want audio loop clips or midi loop clips. MPC does either.

If you want audio clips, yeah as stated, there are tons of audio loop packs out there in different genres, etc. Just look for them and load loops into a clip program on the MPC. Mix and match drums, bass, leads, Vox loops, whatever.

If you want midi clips, I don't see so many of those on the market, or at least which would work with the MPC in a seamless fashion. I have taken midi drum loops from Superior Drummer and loaded them into the MPC where I can then chose the drum kit MPC program to play them on. The way the MPC loads in midi (in standalone) is a little clunky, but it is doable. Again, I don't see a lot of sample packs that include .mpcpattern files (MPC's proprietary midi files), but I have only used the include packs and freebies. If someone included those in packs it could be pretty great.

Thanks everyone, I guess I did not have the correct terms. I want remade wav loops I can just sequence as one person stated, "backing band" type of concept. I am not a drummer but I can play bass, keyboards, and guitar and want to record my parts on top of remade drum beats, mostly rock and pop beats. I have tried looper pedals, drum machines, etc. and I just do not like them so the MPC seems like the way to go. I really appreciate everyone's comments. I grew up in the 60's when nothing like the MPC existed.

The One and Live II are roughly equivalent... differences are mostly:
* Live II has a battery, speaker, larger pads, optional internal drive storage, more outputs (6)
* One is smaller, has smaller pads, a few more dedicated interface buttons, less outputs (2)

I think the Live II also has an additional USB port that the One doesn't have... but I might be wrong... and a few of the software/controller mode features are (or at least were) not present for the One. Oh and I'm pretty sure the One doesn't have bluetooth.

Other than that, they're pretty much functionally equivalent and can pretty much drop in replace each other without too much hassle.

For your use case, I'd definitely go with the most affordable option - which would be the MPC One.

Correct - Live II has two USB A ports and Bluetooth as well as WiFi. MPC One only has 1 USB A port and no Bluetooth or WiFi.

Wow I like these loops/kits. I especially like the dirty drummer!
