If anyone does use these two machines, can people tell me how?
Also, just a silly question, but can i use the timing of the SP1200 but sequence with the MPC2000xl? Can i sample in from the SP1200 to MPC, therefore having the sound of the sp1200 but the sequencer of the MPC? please explain:)

You mean MIDI right?
It wouldn't even be worth it....Why don't you just take what you sampled in the sp and then send it over to the MPC via disk or whatever and build tracks like that? Have you even read the manual for either mane?

The SP has a proprietary format that cannot read MPC discs and vice versa, the MPC cannot read SP discs.

You could slave the MPC to the SP via midi and control it that way.

You can also do a sample dump via midi but this takes forever. It is easier to use the audio output of the SP to the audio in of the MPC and sample the sounds that way.

Good luck. I had my SP synced to my MPC. It was a powerful combo. I sold the SP though.

i also had the xl and sp1200 together , i sold the sp 1500 for dollars bought for 750. easy flip , get all the drums u can and sample them into the mpc

Dog, DO NOT SELL THAT SP1200.
You really want that signature sound, so don't sample drums into the MPC from the SP. Rather, just sequence the SP1200 with the MPC. You can trigger the SP with either machine once they are MIDI'd up together. Just open a track on the MPC, choose a midi channel and go. You will have to play around. I forget about assigning sounds to specific midi chanels inside the SP1200, which you need to do first, so you can have a separate track in the MPC for each sound in the SP. Can someone clarify that please? Obviously, your sounds will be coming out of the SP1200, but they are sequenced by the MPC. That way, you can retian that nice SP sound. If you sample into the MPC, they will be digitized with the tone of the MPCs engine, which is a little too clean for an SP style drum sound if you ask me. I will ask my homeboy who uses the combo to give me exact data for the SP1200, to MIDI up with the MPC, unless someone can post it first.

too late he sold it and plus you are wrong......you wont lose the signature sound because the signature sound is in the MPC......the engine in the sp will take over...WHAT EVER YOU PUT IN TO THE MPC IS WHAT YOU GET OUT.......MPC is 16 bit cd quality so it will copy the sound to 44khz....the sound won't be 44khz becuz the sound came from the SP.....just like when Pete Rock use to use the SP...when he go to the studio he don't lose the sp sound...just make it sound better...not cleaning it up but turning up the gain......so when i listen to a cd i will not scream "he should have never put this on cd he lost the SP signature sound"

Nah, dog, I beg to differ. A digital copy or "sample" is a re-creation of real sound. Each piece of digital audio gear, from SP1200 to CD player, has it's own converters. Sure, the MPC is 16bit CD quality sound. But the converters on MPC2000s are not really that good. Likewise, the converters on my protools rig sound alot worse than the converters on an Apogee a/d, even when comparing them both at 16 bit. When I sample someone's MPC or ASR into my MPC, I am coloring those sounds with the dry, clean sound of my MPC converters. And, if you want to argue that "it doesn't matter cause it all goes to CD anyway in the end", just listen to a CD of an album recorded on analog tape, and then compare it with one recorded all on protools. I guarantee they sound competely different.
Anyway, all this talk about "it still sounds the same in the mp" is beside the original point. This cat was asking HOW TO USE THE SP with the MPC. Why are you telling him to sample something twice? You got another set of outputs you can use from the SP, which means better mix capabilities and sound separation. You got another sampler that sounds dope out the box, and you can sequence it WITH the mpc, just like you can with any midi gear. Also, being that the SP don't have a digital out, your adding white noise, the kind that takes away from your signal, to the mix by converting in from analog to digital, to analog and back to digital again. WHY would you sample it into another sampler unless you absolutely have to? That is what is not worth it. It's like an extra step for no reason. But hey, I really didn't know he was so hot to sell the thing. I guess if you only want to use one machine, that is definately a valid point. I love my MPC. It's the only sampler I use right now, and that's fine. But if I had the sheer luxury of an SP1200 in my studio, best believe I'm spitting sounds straight out that muthaf$*#er!!

you are wrong. Hands down. MPC 3000 can break down the issue around the converters, but it is possible to replicate the sp1200 sound on an mpc. Pete rock does it ALL THE TIME now that he dont use the sp1200 anymore.

The way I find works for me, is to sample it in the sp1200 (i dont own one so this aint in my rig, but my boys rig is pretty close to mine), then load it into a pc in wav format into a sample editor (I used Soundforge and CEP), then resample it to a lower sample rate. now use CEP's noise remover to get a selection from the wav file where there is no sound, just dead space, this "dead space" does have sound, (dont believe me? normalize it) this is the "grimeyness" of the sp1200. now, instead of telling it to remove the noise, tell it to keep only the noise. Save this as something. now go back to the original kick and eq it and do what you gotta do, now take the sample, and set up one channel as the "grimeyness" side and the other as the kick. play with the channel mixing until it sounds on, and convert to 16 bit 44.1 mono and load it into the mpc. boom.

just like if you sample the sp and put it on cd you still have the sp sound...your comparance doesn't work homie......if you sample the sp into the mpc you still get the sound of an sp......and for the a/d converter thing....the mpc has analog inputs so what are you talking about?..........if you copy an album that was recorded on analog tape and put it in protools...chances are you can make it sound way better....you don't lose the warmth......i know you think i am wrong......what a minute where's boogie man?.....oh well

-- I don't use the two together but have used both ....

Also, just a silly question, but can i use the timing of the SP1200 but sequence with the MPC2000xl?
-- YES ! 1) make your pattern on the SP using its internally sampled sounds and sequencer 2) Set the SP to chase midi clock 3)Set the MPC to send midi clock. 3)Connect an mpc midi out to the SP midi in. 4) Press play on the MPC and the SP should chase. This way the "feel " and "sound" you put into an SP beat will stay the same.

Can i sample in from the SP1200 to MPC, therefore having the sound of the sp1200 but the sequencer of the MPC? please explain.
-- YES! Sorta .... sample into the SP. Play the sample from SP and record it into the MPC ( resample). That's the easiest answer. Check up on the yahoo sp1200 user groups for lot's of SP info. Also www.emulatorarchive.com for lots of tech. info

GOOD LUCK :)

I guess there's no convincing some people. I STAND BY MY S*%T. ANYBODY OUT THERE WITH AN SP1200, DON"T LISTEN TO THE PROPAGANDA. KEEP YOUR VINTAGE MACHINES. THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR THEM. -One

PS- yo Prah, "comparance" is certainly not a word, but good look on the SP user group.

I have both machines and play the Mo-Phatt through my mixin board, and i use the mpc, SP, and Asr-x to sample anything that comes out of the mixing board.. First things first, Once the machines pick up the same sound out my board...they all play back a different sound. The SP is dirty as hell and the ASR(if u dont trash the sample rate) and MPC are squeaky clean. When I sample a Kick or Snare into the MPC from the SP... again there is a difference. Sampling a kick or snare into the Mpc Directly or through the board still leaves u with less than what the 1200 would have gave you. If you preferred a cleaner crisp sound than you just gained it. So all and all...if you(from first hand experience) sample a kick or snare into the MPC from the SP the sound will change. Now i dont know about tweaking the MPC to get the original sound because that is wasted time... just midi up and have the SP do its job.
