MPC X Data Dial - Issue/defect or normal Behaviour ?

Now I have a new unit from another seller - and guess what - no more problems with the dial !

So was definitely the dial. In some rare cases if dial is turned a bit careless there are ignored values ( think thats what my other seller guessed ) but the rate is negligible about 1% in comparison to 50% + on the other unit.

So thanks alot guys, helped me al lot to classify the behaviour.

#edit# after some more testing, its not totally true, there is still the same issue though its much more rare than on the other units. Man is it somewhat normal on the X or what... dont know driving me crazy

#edit# getting a bit obessed of this problem I tested even more.
I can force correct behavior when turning the wheel until it snaps to a value and turning it a tiny bit further but not so far that it snaps into the next value.
When direction is changed then, it works correctly every time.
And it seems to happen on the same spots / rasters on the wheel, there 24 steps ( yes im obsessed ) and its always the same spots causing the wrong behavour.
Obviously there are some mechanical parts that causes the snapping to values, perhaps they are to blame ?. I didnt got the wheel slide off (didnt move without a seriuos amount of force and I didnt want to overdue in case I wont keep the unit)

Do you guys use the X or other models ?

I have the MPC One, no problems with my data wheel

24 detents in an encoder is a standard amount they come with. So you're right. Have the Live mk1 with no issues like this. The X must have a different encoder becuase the live has 20 detents.

I'm alittle confusied. I thought the issue was the encoder not working going the other direction on lists. Are you saying its skipping notches? or not registering them? If so.. than that reminds of the mpc2500. It was an annoying thing about it. I dont believe mine does any skipping but today I will be turning it on for a bit. I'll let you know after a closer look.

All in all the jog wheel on the X is a ton better than the Live IMO

its does not skip them "physically" , but some of them are not recognized on (and only on) direction change ( value backward/turn left after value forward/turn right ). Its funny that it never happens the other way round ( right after left ) . Hope i can explain it proper, my english is not the best.

And yes, apart from that the dial works totally normal, so its possible to scroll arround and all inputs are recognized normal.

I checked its as follow : Go to a notch, one turn right, one turn left. Next notch. Repeat until 360 degree reached

Dealing with encoders skipping is a common problem in engineering. Not a completely exact science. Dealing with the fluctuations is called debouncing and from my experience in using all sorts of encoders (such as a mouse wheel even) it’s not uncommon to experience imperfections. I wouldn’t worry about it mate. My MPC one might have this issue even but it’s something I expect to happen now and then so my brain would just ignore it and move the dial another notch!

Yes, thats a good point and very usefull information too ! But Im not sure, if the problem is a general (similiar) problem with dials or specific to my X unit(s). (perhaps theres a faulty charge ?)
So its always specific spots on the dial only, and to be honest If general I dont understand why the behaviour is not frequently reported because input like this is highly unreliable
Imagine a live situation where to accidently select a wrong sequence. Its like a mouse which clicks work only 9 of 10 times. And for this price I dont know, had cheap synths with data dials totally reliable.
It would help me to make peace with my unit if anyone could reproduce, but it seems to be not that widespread.

So... to make the long story short :

I have now another Replacement Unit.
Zero problems
Data-Dial works totally as expected so far.

It has a shipping number 200 numbers away from my other units, so seems there was a faulty charge if you ask me. ( Or i was simply lucky to get a unit with better dial now )
Didnt update to 2.10 yet, but the other units didnt work proper with the preinstalled 2.9.1 too so I hope it will be fine.

Akai didnt respond so far, don´t know how long it will take

*edit* after updating to 2.10.1, installing a harddrive and more testing:
Zero problems - all notches work fine and no values are skipped. Man this is my 5th unit now this stuff made me go crazy. Finally I got a unit to make peace with ( ...ALMOST, the headphones output has a bit clumsy stereo behavior on different volumes, which i had on the other units too, but thats a diffent story and I can live with that)

To be honest, I got quite a lot of equip and had no other device being affected by such different issues making me exchange it multiple times. But its ok for me now, thanks for your answers again !

good to hear. possible your headphone monitor is rotated to mix and maybe thats why you have that volume issue. If you just turn it to the left it should be good. If that isnt your issue than ignore what im saying lol. Just nice to hear you got your issue resolved.

This headphone thing happens when i change the headphone volume controller in the front side of the X.
On 2 units when turning volume below 8/9:00 oclock the right stereo channel disapeared about 75%.
On my current unit it somewhat randomly fades left /right about 10% on different volumes. Its doable to find good stereo spots.
So its not really honorable for a device that expensive but I can live with that ( And Im totally terrified
getting a faulty Data Dial in exchange lol )
