Hey everyone.

TLDR at the bottom - sorry for wall of text.

I have spent hours looking online but cannot seem to find anything similar to my issue.

As the title says, I recently bought an MPC One (from Amazon.co.uk), hooked it up, and updated firmware to the most recent version. For about 5-6 hours, it was working perfectly - I went away for a couple of hours. After coming back, I noticed the bottom left pad (kick drum) wasn't playing any sound. I cycled through the pads, about 4 seemed to work without issues, the remainder ranged from sounding slightly distorted (noisy), to just noise, to completely silent.

I reset the unit a few times, both turning it off and again, and resetting user preferences, but, still, the problem persists. So I not long after tried to return it/flag the issue on Amazon, and spoke to one of their customer service people who seemed to know some stuff about the MPC One. This was Saturday, and after no luck on the call, he said he'd arrange a call with Akai on the Monday. So Sunday I figured I'd try again to diagnose or, even better, fix the issue.

My main synth/drumkit before was the JDXI (I'm quite new to all this and this seemed like a good initial starting point - I love it, but there are some limitations that have become increasingly frustrating to deal with). I swapped the MPC One out for the JDXI, and, lo' and behold, the same problem was there too! About 7 keys (of the 37 total) worked, the others just gave some short burst of noise. I will mention here that the JDXI was what I was using up until about half an hour before my MPC One arrived -- it was working perfectly until now.

So, at this point, I figure it must be my cheap-but-served-me-well Behringer Xenyx 802. So I swap that out for an older audio interface: another cheap Behringer U-Phoria UM2. But, the problem is still there. On both machines. So it must be the cables. No, I've swapped the cables, no change. They are cheap enough to test with so I bought a new 6.35mm Stereo Jack to Twin 6.35mm Mono. Still nothing. Maybe it's my speakers - same issue on my headphones!

If I plug my headphones into my JDXI, the problem is not there - the synth works fine. So now I'm pretty sure the issue isn't my MPC One. If I plug my headphones into my MPC One, I am 99% sure it is working, but the sound is so loud it is hard to tell for certain. But I have tried every possible combination of output, cables, interface, and gear that I own. I am happy (and kind of expecting) to buy more stuff, but I would like to know exactly what I should be buying, or where I went wrong.

Has anyone had a similar issue? I assume if I buy active speakers and plug the MPC One directly into them, it will work. This is going to be my next test - if they don't work, I will send the speakers back.

I guess my current theory is that it is my mixer (the Xenyx) that is the issue - it worked by good fortune initially, but then whatever reason for its incompatibility eventually came through and stopped working. The audio interface I swapped it with, arguably worse, would also present the same issue. Otherwise, I'm at an utter loss.

TLDR: Recently bought MPC One. It worked fine for a few hours, then most pads no longer playing sound properly (noisy), or not at all. Thought it was MPC One, but swapped it out for JDXI, and problem on there too. Swapped audio interfaces, and cables. No luck. Should I buy active speakers to plug the MPC One directly into? Does anyone know what is causing this issue?

Thank you!

I'm sorry I do not understand anything to your problem. PADS aren't directly related to sound. PADS just trigger MIDI events so if something sounds bad or distorded, it cannot be related to the MPC PADS, at all, unless PADS don't trigger when hit, therefore they are faulty.

If you have a faulty unit and the unit is under warranty, then send it back to your retailer for repair or a refund.
