having issues with my microphone on mpc one

yeah,i am new to production and all of that,but can someone help me here? i have a scarlet solo and i have it connected to my pc on usb and my mpc connected to my pc also via usb. The question is my microphone does work,but i have to turn the gain to max and even then i sounds pretty quiet. yeah,i am on controller mode.

anyone knows what's happening?

What type of mic? A condenser will need 48v phantom power, a dynamic needs decent preamp gain.

the shure sm58

SM58 is quite a low output dynamic mic but it should get enough gain from the pre-amp on the Scarlet to get a fairly usable signal. It's not going to be super loud, not unless you are really going for it with the vocal and it ultimately depends on the gain possible from the scarlet. But an SM58 not the best mic for studio recording IMO. You should really be looking at a condenser mic, or a dynamic with a higher output.

i know it isn't,but my room isn't treated,and i wanted something that wouldn't break bank and would allow me to rap a bit and see how my voice sounds.

anyway,do you think i am doing something wrong?should i get some other cables and see it it sounds louder?i am honestly confused as i thought it would sound way louder.i am not being loud,true,but i feel like i am doing something wrong. is plugging my mic into the scarllet really enough?is there no more tweaking?

The Focusrite Scarlett Solo has 9dBu (at minimum gain) for the mic input, which should be ample for the Shure SM58 (its sensitivity dBV/Pa is -54.5 and 1.6 mvpa). Not sure if the 300 ohm Impedance is the issue, though. Do you have your Scarlett Solo in Instrument mode by accident?

neh it's off. since i am new to production i have no clue if any of the buttons in scarllet are important to recording.no clue what the director monitor knob does nor what the button under the microphone gain knob does.

my headset volume was low when i posted this thread,and it's better now that i increased the volume in my headphones and in the mix,but pretty sure it's not supposed to be low like that without all that workaround. maybe i am just being too quiet.

I strongly encourage you to read your actual owners manual for your Scarlet interface, and get acquainted with what each control does and its use case. It will save you a ton of headaches (and possibly, embarrassment).
