1985...

Just found an unplayed copy of the "She's Wild" 12" Single from Hiko & The Great Peso, Tommy Boy 1985. This $h!+ is insane.

The vinyl has two instrumentals. I'm guessing this was done on an SP-12 since it's '85. I sampled a track straight to my 1000 and MP3'd it.

Whatever it is lots of the sounds have been pitched right down. I think it might be a Linn Drum though..... & lots of that 80's gated reverb.

Tommy Boy put out loads of insane records in their early days.

"Planet Rock" ..... even with its references to Kraftwerk's "Trans Europe Express" there had been nothing like that before.

Has to be a sampler, a linn drum can't sequence those pitch changes, probably a sampler with stock drum sounds and other stuff sampled in.

Yes, Paul Winley released recordings of Martin Luther King & (I think) Malcolm X ......... obviously without any permission. That guy was the original bootlegger!

What I meant was the record where Keith LeBlanc, the drummer from Wood, Brass & Steel who was also on all the old Sugarhill tracks, put a Malcolm X speech to beats. I'm pretty sure that was on Tommy Boy.

yeah, that's what i thought too. maybe even an Oberheim DX and they PROM'd in their own sounds.

No way, some sampler was involved if not responsible for everything.

right, that's why i'm thinking SP-12. it was released the same year as this recording. the only other thing they probably could have used was an Oberheim DX or something that would allow them to PROM in their own sounds. i still think it's an SP-12 though.

Well, they could have used a fairlight too, but it sounds like sp 12 to me as well.

I found a website by accident a few years ago but forgot to bookmark it & haven't found it since. It was the history of the fairly small NYC studio that got to beta test all the new sampling technology back then, which is why there was a Fairlight in the studio for the orchestral stabs on Planet Rock. Does anyone know the site I mean?

As for the other comments I NEVER Thought that A LINNDRUM Sequencer was USED Jus' the Sounds......................

They could have sampled A Linn or A DMX or Whatever then Used the samplers SEQ or even Midi UP an APPLE IIe or IIc or Even An Atari ......

Sure, Linn sounds or DMX sounds are there. They could have gone to a studio that had the Fairlight, like said above, Planet rock had a fairlight on it, so...
