Sample an ext midi synth by pressing a pad to trigger note

Sounds simple. Using a track and midi program to trigger notes from the pads to an external synth. I want to sample a single note. So I switch to sample mode, set inputs and levels but pressing the pads produces a very low note, too low to be usable. What's going on?

Thank for the reply. Pad 1 is always C-2 in Sampler mode. I can change the octaves in pad perform and see the correct notes in the midi monitor output page, but when you switch to Sampler mode and press a few pads, the midi monitor output page always shows C-2 to D#-1. Is there any other way to change the octaves that I'm not aware of? I'm new to the MPC 2 hardware.

It seems that entering the sampler resets it to chromatic mode. press the bank button again. Probably it is a side effect of the sampler's pad assignment feature.

I thought I had it but I'm confused again. If I turn the octave to -2 in Pad Perform then

Bank A Pad 1 is C-2 (red) Sampler mode Pad 1 is C-2
Bank B Pad 1 is C-1 (red) Sampler mode Pad 1 is E-1

Now I know you all know this, but it does scramble the notes. I can see why, the pad perform puts a next octave starting on Pad 1 and the Sampling does chromatic notes without regard to root note. I get how it works. Thanks!

Why not put your note(s) sequenced on the grid and press play and use sampler or looper mode ?

Yes I could. Just wanted to press the pads in real time and feel it. I've got it figured out now though.
