Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

To those that use SCSI Hard Drives with their 2000xl's: Do you save your programs & sounds in separate folders from your songs & sequences? Beyond that, do any of you save programs & sounds on, for example, partition D and your songs & sequences on partition E.

I saved an ALL file recently in the same folder, same partition as a set of programs & sounds. When I turned on the MPC the next day, the Programs & sounds loaded fine, trying to load the songs & sequences gives me a message like this: Error at DT03:00PC.

I've spoked with the seller of the HD and he mentioned that I should possibly save on separate partitons like I've described. What chall think?

Saving on separate partitions is not going to help that issue and in general I think it is a good idea to keep the files associated with a particular project together. This make backing up and other work later easier.

There could be a physical error on the drive (bad sector) or the file could be corrupt. You do have a backup, right?

yo it depends. i have that same hard drive and i also save on 100 meg zip drive. I save all my sounds in different programs. like i will sample and fill up three banks with samples and the fourty bank with drums. I name each sound depending on where i got the samples from and i write them down so if I use them and need to clear them later they will be written and recorded. then I name the program say soul sounds 1. if i make a beat using those sounds and i need to come back to the samples and beats, i will name my beats soul sounds beat 1 , 2 ,3 and so on. its very simple.

for the partitions you can do ii that way with programs not all, or lets say u are on part A and u want to save it all.prgms and then all.seq_songs. you do it that way. for one program and songs. then if u want to save again on part A al you have to do is save all again but rename them all prgms2. and allseq_ sound2. and write everything down. it takes more time, but you will be more organized. I do both on my harddrive. sometimes on the zip drive it will say directory full, so i will resave those sounds and beats to the sczi harddrive. that hardrive is mych faster and bigger. its good to have both like I do. you can choose both or either and backup files. I like using the zip disks cause i can rack up on sounds and keep them on the disks. whether i make beats or not I will have those sounds on disks and can come back to them later and mix and match them with other sets if I so choose. there is not specific way to do this,. find your niche and be creative.

make sure u name all you files on the mpc because if u have 5 sounds names sound 5 on one partition, the hard drive will not know which sound 5 to load up. so name our sounds. its ok to save on mulitple partitions and or on the same partition .

My original thoughts too.

There could be a physical error on the drive (bad sector) or the file could be corrupt. You do have a backup, right?

No, but I have to in the future. I guess you have to get stung sometimes before you realize. Wondering if there's anyway of retreving that ALL file or if it's corrupted. The seller mentioned something about each folder only being 512 in size...

I really need to go get some disks and start saving.

Man - I feel you. Sometimes I'm surrounded by legal pads. my friends see the notes and are like, what the hell is that?

then I name the program say soul sounds 1. if i make a beat using those sounds and i need to come back to the samples and beats, i will name my beats soul sounds beat 1 , 2 ,3 and so on. its very simple.

for the partitions you can do ii that way with programs not all, or lets say u are on part A and u want to save it all.prgms and then all.seq_songs. you do it that way. for one program and songs. then if u want to save again on part A al you have to do is save all again but rename them all prgms2. and allseq_ sound2. and write everything down. it takes more time, but you will be more organized. I do both on my harddrive.

Let me make sure I follow you - you are talking about backing up in the same folder right? I'm thinking I might be exceeding the 512 Mb capacity of each folder? Maybe I'm off...

sometimes on the zip drive it will say directory full, so i will resave those sounds and beats to the sczi harddrive. that hardrive is mych faster and bigger. its good to have both like I do. you can choose both or either and backup files. I like using the zip disks cause i can rack up on sounds and keep them on the disks.

So, the only disk I have now is the one that came with the MPC. It looks like you can get about one full program w/ 4 banks per disk - is that about right?

whether i make beats or not I will have those sounds on disks and can come back to them later and mix and match them with other sets if I so choose. there is not specific way to do this,. find your niche and be creative.

if u have a zip disk u can fit mad sounds on one disk. on a floppy u will be lucky if u can have all 4 banks full depending on how long the sounds are u might have like 10 floppies. be wise and dont use floppies too much time and trouble. use z zip. yeah i like to write everything down well not actually but it is safer that way.

u dont have to back up sounds. i dont necessairyl do that. I have my sounds on zips at least. if i fill up the zips with too much files whether its sounds, sequences or too many folders it will only take a certain limit. in that case i will go back and delete some beats i dont need or same with sounds i dont like , like a crappy snare or a sample i know i wont use. after that i might safe that set to the sczi hard drive, work and finish the beat and delete it off the hard drive. the sound will be still on the zip disk and if I finish a beat, i record it into pro tools. when i record into pro tools usually the beat is totally done and programmed how i wanted it. If i ever want to lets say change the sequence of anything I can just midi sync it and change that one track. So i dont have to keep everything on mpc, but its all a matter of choice.

deafdiction - it sounds like you save onto zips before your HD? That may be the step I've been skipping. Ok - So, assuming I'm not working with really long samples - How many programs will fit on a 100 meg zip?
I really need to get a computer hooked up. Right now, its just the MPC - no recording software or hardware. Then I could load wav. format samples so much easier as well.

thats not to say that u have to save onto zips first. well it depends hot long ur samples are. somtimes i take real long samples 3-4 bars. then chopt them. so i sould have a copy of the original sample and ex. 4 pieeces of that sample. but i usually have 8-10 programs on a zip. basically i fill my zip up with about 80-90 gigs and thats alot of samples and sounds. so if your not using long samples u could prob fit double what i have lets say 20 prgms. yeah ur next step is a cpu to hold all ur wav.s on. with software. umm i also have a external harddrive for my mac, so i can store my audio files from pro tools. if u are working with limited equip but u have only zips ur fine. all u have to do is name programs lets say soul sounds1. then every beat u make u can name it soul sounds 1 or name it soulsounds then the name of the beats and save them all to your zip. or the harddrive. its not too complicated, when u experiience it u will know. its not that my method is the best because my method is long and tedious, but it prevents lossing sounds. another thing is that i save often. i do this in case the power goes out or my mpc freezes. when i sample i save the program after every record i samplle. organizaition is key.

i just discovered that if i partition my 4GB scsi HD into 26 parts (A-Z), and save my programs as SND, they load from the hard drive much faster then if the programs are samed as WAV... does anyone else know of any tricks to make the programs load faster?
