yo, another newbie here with some questions.

you guys might've seen the 60 i just picked up on ebay a few weeks ago. 3.10 OS and memory expansion for $800. i had to also pay him the paypal fee in order to charge it to my cc but i felt like it was a good deal. no scsi though. we're both in san diego so i tested it out and picked it up from the guy at the hiphop shop he works at. he's got a little studio set up there with a 2kxl, triton, and an EPS (which he uses, didn't have time to learn the 60 so that's why he got rid of it). he didn't really show me anything though and basically said '"well, here you go, good luck!" he did leave me a disk with one program (kick, snare, hi-hat).

anyways, i've been reading the manual and trying to figure out how to work this thing but to no avail. the only thing i've managed to do is make a 2 bar drum loop with the sounds/program he left me. i got my table hooked up and also managed to sample something.

i think he showed me that it has the memory expansion which means it should be able to sample up to 26 seconds or something? but when i got home and tried to sample something the other day it would only let me go up to 13 some seconds for the sample time. he says you can compress the sound to get up to 50 seconds too? well, i can't figure out how to do this or to simply sample something at 26 seconds either.

how can i loop a 4 (or 8 or 12) bar sample? for example, say i sample something that's 4 bars. i go to sounds and edit sound to make the start and end position then assign that sound to a pad but when i press record & play it only loops it for 2 bars and i can't get it to loop the complete 4 bar sample.

i think i've tried going to edit loop and manually typing in 4 in the bar input zone but it automatically defaults to 2 or 1. i can't type in any other number but 1 or 2.

should i create a new track for each sound? like one track is hi-hat, one track is snare, one track is kick, etc.?

say i create a drum sequence with those tracks. then do i need to create a new sequence to have a melody sample play on top of that (i guess it would be one track on that sequence)?

i'm just tryin' to figure out how to make a intro sequence with the main 4-bar melody sample looping for two times, then have the hi-hats come in for 4 bars, then kick for 4, then snare for 4 and then have that all play together for 8 bars, then introduce like a chorus for 4 bars, and go back to the verse, etc.

any help would be GREATLY appreciated about trying to get my sample memory to reflect properly and looping a 4 bar or 8 bar melody from a record to play underneath a 2 bar drum loop.

first off read the manual...it's your friend

go to edit, insert bars, use the knob to turn the insert bars before to "2" instead of one so it will loop to the beginning...

I use a track for each instrument but you don't have to..that's on you

just make a different sequence for your intro and the other crap

man, i have been reading the manual as best i can but i'm not following some of it.

i have the setting to loop at 2 bars instead of 1. but my sample is 4 bars in length. with the expanded memory i should essentially be able to sample an 8 or even 12 bar sample and have that whole thing loop, right?

i've only used acid and cakewalk plasma before and those were simple insert loop and drag for as many bars as you want. i can't figure out how to do this on the 60.

also, how can i make the sample fit my tempo? is that feature only available on the 2kxl? something called timestretch?

how can you hear all your sequences played together. like say an intro sequence then verse, then chorus, then verse and then an outro or something? do you do this in song mode?

cuz when i'm pressing play from start it just keeps looping the 2 bar drum pattern and goes to overdub and i ad some stuff and then it keeps looping the new pattern. but how to i tell it for how many times/how many bars to loop before going to the next sequence?

Then alter that 4 bar joint and copy it again and on and on. In song mode you can repeat stuff by moving to the place where it says "repeat" and turning your wheel or punching in numbers. You'll get it in no time.

^hey, thanks. but how do i get my 4 bar sample to loop? right now when i hit play + record and hit the pad which my sample is assigned to it only loops 2 bars of the 4 bar sample. in other words, it cuts off short and begins to loop it at 2 bars, not 4 (or 8 or 12 or any other number of desired bar/sample lengths).

so i have this sample that lasts 4 bars but i can't get it to loop for more than 2 bars.

I just ordered the 3.1 upgrade. Thanks to DJames for hipping me to Route66. It was only $112.

Dude, slow down ( I'm off my ass drunk, so you know I'm serious!)

Go to edit, 5.copy bars, and copy them once, and you'll have 4 bars.\

If you have 3.10 and you only have 13 seconds of sample time you got screwed, you got no memory upgrade or it's not installed properly.

unless the samples you got in there take up half the mem.

typing sucks drunk, so I gotta stop. Slow the **** down and get to know it, and the memory isn't expanded, so get $100 back if you can.

No doubt brethren, that's what we're here for ;)

Highlife: is your sample screen is only showing 13 seconds you only have 750 KB of ram which means it's not expanded like El said. Probably not going to be able to get $100 back though, but you should holla at cat.

Highlife,
just turn the unit on without a floppy in it then go to the sample screen and see what the highest number is.
You can also follow the instructions for checking memory:

Q: How do I find out if my MPC60 has expanded memory?
A: If your MPC60 is running version 3.0 software or higher:

Turn on your MPC60.
Press SOUNDS, then 5 for the sampling screen.
Move the cursor to the LENGTH field and spin the DATA ENTRY knob to the right.
If the field contents go above 13.1, you have memory expansion. If not, you don't.
OR

Turn on your MPC60.
Place a disk containing a SND or SET file into the disk drive.
Press DISK, then 6.
Read the AVAILABLE SOUND MEMORY field. If it says 1536K, you have memory expansion. If it says 768K, you don't.

use the second option, the old 60 OS can only sample up to 5 seconds, so you need to see the ram in Kb's.

i'm back with news. i will try to slowdown with my questions too 8)

ok, it DOES have the expanded memory. it seems as though the memory was full/used because i loaded files/samples from a floppy already. so i guess just need to take out the floppy and reboot in order to free up all the memory again to start sampling new sounds with the full 26 seconds?

elmacaco, will that action make my loop 4 bars so it will account for the complete sample? and i want to select loop to bar 1 so it will loop from the beginning of the 4-bar sample, right?

so i would put this melody sample on track 1, seq. 1, and add tracks like hi-hat, snare, kick, etc. and then record a sequence with all those tracks. then i can copy that sequence and repeat it for however many bars?

how can i make my sample match the timing (BPMs)? right now i'm increasing the pitch on my turntable because the sample is too slow. i do not know what the BPMs of the sample are, i'm just going by ear.

so i have this sample with the start and end positions to where i think they ought to be. assigned it to a pad. hit play/record and record the 4 bar loop but it doesn't sound right. in other words it's not matching the drum loop i recording earlier.

what function do i use to match the sample with the drum loop?

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR INSIGHT!
