My Theory is.... The MPC XL will be an Extension of the Classic Live. Akai will not see A Revenue Bump by replacing the X with another $2,000-2,500 Mega MPC X part 2.

Releasing a More Powerful "Live" size Version would be the way...THEN...they could announce a "X" size Version of the "XL Live" size version. Then release a Mini "ONE" size version.

But this is AKAI (InMusic) and they do things "Bass Ackwards"

The vast majority of complaints I've seen about the Key61 is that it didn't have 16 qlink knobs, a second sub out and a tiltable screen. All valid and fair points as it would have made it a much better product, not only for its users but for Akai as well, as it likely would have made them a lot more money.

Thats probably because Akai is trying to introduce New Product while keeping The Cost Of Production Low. 16 Qlinks, Tilt Screen, etc would have jacked the Price of the Key 61 $1,000+

Under $2,000 Retail is where the Sweet Spot Is!

That's why my theory is the "MPC XL" will be Live XL type unit. Between $1,500-$1,800ish

Yeah and that's a really bad decision which tells me the people behind it probably have no idea what they're selling. If your claim below was remotely accurate then I could possibly see some reason for hesitation as it would push the Key61 price way above that of budget workstations, which probably wouldn't suit the riskphobics over at Akai and their comfort zone too well. Doesn't mean it wouldn't still be a success.

In what universe exactly? If that was the case then the Key61 would have cost like $20,000 as it is. Get real.

not sure bout this logic; every unit has had some sort of referesh except the MPC X; so logically it would make sense that the flagship unit gets a refresh in time for the 35 year anniversary

Economically....MPC Live/II/ONE has been the Most Important of the Group.

In This Universe Everything is based on Economics ... Reality!

Logic and Economics are TWO Different things on this side of the Milky Way!

Logic..... would be to Perfect the Firmware much as possible before introducing New Features/Hardware.

Economically....Saturate the Market with New Products to the Largest Group of Potential Customers who will MOST LIKELY Spend Their Money ($$$$)

AKAI has been making "Bad Decisions" for Years Now

Let me Reiterate....These are NOT Facts, Just my Interpretation.

Obviously entitled to your opinions... but Logic is specifically about applying truths and facts to derive further truths and facts. You kind of lost me with munging Logic, Facts, Opinions, and Interpretation on your post

I know it is a bit out dated thinking, but it still is valid when discussing economics to think about Blue Ocean, Red Ocean... as well as Up Market and Down Market. You might be right about saturating the market with a large group of potential customers who will most likely spend their money, but that ends up leaving a lot of money on the table. Look at how a company like Apple does a lot of price ladders that will start you off low... say $399 for a basic iPad... and then they ratchet up product differentiation to the insane level's of $2000 to $3000 maxed out 2TB storage with max memory and built in GPS and cell receiver.

Frankly, Akai's option of Retro/Not Retro, and One/Live/X, with the next not having a retro edition, is kind of small in comparison. I guess probably compares better to Nintendo's traditional style of handheld sales. Differentiate on only a handful of features like model size and basic/pro, and then just throw in some rare or unique color options to boot.

Anyways... who knows what Akai's product management team thinks or compares themselves to

For all the people poo pooing Akai for not knowing what they are doing....
The reason Akai keeps making new MPC's is because they are selling well at all the current price points. While sure you can buy it and then find a bunch of things you don't like it about, the people have spoken and Akai makes products that people want.

With the current line of MPC's there are more MPC users then it has ever been. Even if you are content with your MPC but want more stability and features from legacy devices, that development cost will only be expended if Akai keeps bringing in money and there are enough users giving feedback.

I don't understand the conservative take on AKAI, is it a fragile thing that could cough and pass out of existence because of somewhat negative feedbacks in a forum. If ideas, suggestions and sometimes rants are not to be shared here, then what would be the place. I have no problems with people thinking differently.
