Done it for a couple companies in the past and recently the 'public beta' for SoundToys. In all these cases, there is an internal team that handles the majority of the work and the 'public' testers get to play with it and just make sure nothing is broken. Never seen a script or anything to run against like I have doing this kinda stuff 'in house' at work. Most of it was ages ago, and I got the plugins I tested for free out of it. SoundToys was just a fun one since it was the whole VST3 update and its not like anything new was coming out from them.

Ultimately I'm wondering if these companies normally have an extensive alpha team consisting of actual full time paid staff, 9-5 testing the stuff before handing over to volunteer public beta testing, or do they just rely on volunteers throughout the entire chain, even on the internal team.

Thought I'd register on the forum after reading a few posts in this thread. Here's my experience.

tl;dr - RUN. RUN AWAY AND DON'T LOOK BACK.

So I was "beta testing" the MPC Live for Akai for several years on their super secret beta testing forum, and during this time, I submitted close to 67 bug reports, 83 UI/workflow suggestions, and countless other ideas to make the MPC a better machine to use. I have experience beta testing in other fields, and I'm intrinsically familiar with both the vintage/modern MPC workflows. Everything was thoroughly documented, and submitted in a way that should have made sense to even the most basic user. From where I stand, there are smart ways to bridge the gap between workflows and have it make sense, but when I tell you Akai has been a dumpster fire for literal YEARS, please, believe me. Or don't, I guess. I know some of the users are bizarre Akai apologists, so if you are one of them, you do you and miss me with that.

For the petty stuff: want to take a wild guess as to how many of my suggested bugs were hammered out (as far as I was informed)? Zero. How about the workflow suggestions they claim to care so much about. Zero. Akai offered zero feedback on what was accepted, what was being working on, when a new beta could be expected, or hell, ANY information. It got to the point where a few of us thought maybe everyone at Akai lost their login info. There were periods of months were there was zero word about anything. To add insult to injury, there was another Akai ALPHA group running in parallel, and the only way any of us knew was because Akai reps would cross lines, confuse the two, and leak their own information. It's a ****.

For the more juicy stuff: I have it on good authority via a few direct sources that they are NOT doing well behind the scenes. You know how a few users have said the people programming the MPC don't use the MPC? Believe that. Also believe the stories of hired guns fixing the code of previous employees. INMUSIC is NOT interested in implementing things that aren't already available in their previous software from ten+ years ago, because that would require knowing what to do, and why do that when you can copy/paste your way though this lifecycle?

Basically, save your time and energy. Don't sign up for beta. It's both free marketing and free QC for them, which wouldn't be such a bad thing if they knew what they were doing with it.

The other companies I tested for, were pretty much 'Just use this and let us know if you run into any trouble'. No forums or feedback from devs or anything. The old FXPansion team had us on a mailing list when we beta tested the ancient VST2AU wrapper when OS X first came out and Angus was pretty communicative.

Sound Toys definitely does have internal testers, some of the bugs users ran across during the Apple Silicon/VST3 betas were already found by the team when they were reported and we'd have new builds every few days or so. They have a forum open for feedback and whatnot for the 'public beta' stuff, but at that point it was beyond their internal team who just doing further checks and last minute fixes at that point.

Then why stretch your ressources so thin you have to work on so many products? The standalones, the Force, the MacOS and Windows software, the plugins, this is what I don't understand.

Just focus on a single product with a few UI variation for richer clients, but only work on a single codebase and that's it.

AKAI can't have it both ways. Frankly how many people are really using MPC Software? It's a terrible DAW, so why have some engineers waste time on that? Nobody is going to give up Cubase or Live for MPC Software when one can't even automate effects on Buses and Master tracks... They could have just extracted the drum and keygroup programs, make it standalone VST like Kontakt, and sell expansions on top of that, much easier to maintain.

And why bother with the Force at first place? There is nothing that is in the Force OS that could not be done in the MPC. As a result, the MPC is seriously lagging compared to the Force.

3 years ago I would have applied to the tester program in a heartbeat. Today? No, I don't want to brick my device or have to use something that is completely buggy. If only the new functions were buggy then it would be fine, but they are adding bugs to old functions each time they add something new, there is a real engineering problem at AKAI/InMusic, customers aren't that stupid when they see the state of the software of their devices... their hunch is 100% based on facts.

The MPC software might actually be good for testing some things. Instead of having to use a real or emulated ARM device to even get anything running at all, you can try things out on your desktop. It's not exactly the same, but halfway there at least.

Curious what device you moved on to because of all this? I can see myself sticking around with the MPC for a while, but my optimism has been worn away in a matter of 2 years. The potential is great, but the people running the show are not.

Thats kind of how I feel about it now 3 years later.. I LOVE the workflow and really REALLY like the device with 2.10 on it, but I still have a wish list for 2.10 that never got done (like making it into a REAL sampler finally) and I know anything from this point on is just going to be a shitshow. They've just lost their way (although to be fair 'the way' was a completely different no longer existing Japanese company who **** RULED at what they did)

After a couple of years, I was ready to move up and grab an X, but wanted to wait and see if a refresh came, but at this point, I'm keeping the Live where it's at until I can't use it anymore. After that I'll probably just keep it easy and go back in the box. Lord knows I've spent way too much on software I don't use enough and to be honest, I've gotten familiar enough with Cubase's Groove Agent that it can pretty much replace the MPC's drum programs for me in a heartbeat, and as for the keygroups.. Well on the Mac even the cheap ass TAL Sampler blows the MPCs sampler away, and I still have my EMU E6400 that runs circles around it too..

This sounds EXACTLY like my experience after the one guy passed away several years ago. I forgot his name, wasn't he a manager or something?

Completely agree. I was part of the beta team for a few years and I recently left because it's time-consuming and because those MPCs are still full of bugs today, and for many other reasons. I will probably sell my unit, by the way.

Bodyguard, thank you for your Frank assessment. I was considering applying for the beta program, I'm a former software engineer at Emu and have been around the business a bit even though it has been a few decades. I thought perhaps my skills could help, but if they're that disheveled, I don't think I want to get involved.

I just wanna say ditto what Lampdog said. RESPECT
Go talk to Dave and tell him to quit that Eurorack nonsense and finish up the USB card for these already..

I absolutely KNEW it!!! Been fed up with my own negativity so stopped posting here a while back, but I knew they had no clue about engineering a generally intuitive workflow such as Roger did with the old ones. Let alone fixing bugs. For the sense of release that your comment brings me, thank you. Now I know I wasn't just being a b*tch. :smoker:
