I swear, must be losing my mind.

Does anyone use Audio Evolution to record into their iPad? My computer is down for the count and I want to record from my X into that app.

No cable structure seems to work. 1/4” out of the main outs into the 1/8 port on my iPad. Nothing. Using an interface with the same cables. Nothing.

Anyone who actually records this way, can you please (like I’m 5 years old) explain how you get the audio from your MPC into an app on your iPad. This shouldn’t be difficult.

Thanks in advance.

If your iPad has a Lightning port (guessing from the 1/8“ port), you need a Camera Connection Kit between iPad and interface. It makes the (internal) USB port appear as a host to external devices.
Otherwise there‘s no communication, except for interfaces that have native lightning connectivity.

Naturally, this didn’t work either. I swear, the worst part about producing is easily the weird ways devices connect to send audio and midi. Making beats is easy. For some reason, connecting devices (and recording) is ridiculously difficult and complicated.. and there’s no basic explanation how to do it.

C’est La vie. I’ll wait until my MacBook is fixed. But, I appreciate you trying to help. Thanks.

well, the CCK connection works with practically all usb class compliant interfaces (which is the majority today), even with $5 stick type devices.
But: you have to give the interface permission to access the microphone in security settings...

I could not connect MPC and iPad pro via usb in my environment.

I wasn’t criticizing the advice. I’d be willing to bet that there’s a way to do it the way you suggested. I’m just unable to figure it out without detailed instructions. I’m just awful at cabling things together. Always have been.

Don‘t worry, it didn‘t come over as „critical“.
I just wanted to make clear that it‘s not related to cabling (except for the insertion of a CCK), but to software settings.
The device talking to the iPad must be USB audio class compliant (as it‘s called)
and it needs permission to „access the microphone“
The latter usually pops up as a dialog the 1st time a connection is established, but sometimes it doesn‘t, so you have to open security settings manually.

But I missed the X in your original question  which is not class compliant in regular mode. It may be in controller mode (dunno), but that wouldn‘t help you anyway.
Sorry for confusion.

ps: in case you have some other audio interface, you could connect that to the iPad via CCK and use it‘s line in/outs with the MPC X just like on a PC/Mac.

I'm android but use a mobile interface and opencamera for quick videos.
Are you trying to record directly from the X or through a mobile interface

I have an X. A Scarlett 2i2. A camera connection kit with a lightning port. An iPad from an earlier generation that has a lightning charger port and a 1/8” (for headphones, essentially).

Dual 1/4” coming out of the main out of the X into the dual 1/4” input of the Scarlett. A dual 1/4” with a lightning cable on the other end coming out of the Scarlett outputs into the CCK. CCK is plugged into the lightning charging port of the iPad.

Microphone is on in audio evolution settings.

Nothing.

I’m giving up and asking for a refund. This is insane.

That’s how I initially tried to do it (because it’s how I sample out of my iPad into the X, just reversed). Essentially a twin 1/4” coming out of the X’s two main outputs into the 1/8” port on my iPad. But, based on the post immediately above mine, it looks like I need to buy a powered USB hub and connect via the interface. So, it was a mixture of cabling, powering the interface, and software settings. Pretty frustrating that it’s that complicated, but it is what it is.

Thanks, man. I think this may have solved it. Now, I just need to wait for the powered USB hub to arrive and test it out. It’s funny that like 50 different google searches I did before I even posted on here wouldn’t have picked up that video, but…. In any event, I really appreciate the time you took to help.

You‘re welcome... :smoker:
Admittedly you happened (by plain chance) to have a mixture of devices that are indeed a bit nasty to connect.

There may be even another hurdle (which I just learned about when looking for the video), but I‘m not sure it will show up.
Some audio interfaces connect to IOS as „mass storage devices“ initially. In that case you would find a disk called Scarlett or Focusrite Whatsoever in the Files app :Sigh:
(it‘s a bizarre sequence of knobs pushing and power up/downs on the interface to get it out of that mode and identify itself correctly as an audio device)

Regarding your original attempt with 2 1/8“ plugs into the 4pin headphone socket:
that only gives you 1 channel of audio on the mic line of the 4pin socket and only if IOS senses an impedance between 1.5-3kOhm. It does check this and in case of mismatch uses the internal mic.

There is no IOS device that can digitize 2-channel audio on it‘s own.
Ages ago there was, the last one that could do this trick was the iPhone 3gs, but the respective 2 pins of the 30pin connector are cut out of every cable or adapter existing.
I still use (and love) my 3gs and checked with a magnifier

On the other hand IOS is a great audio system and you may find use for it‘s synths and fx together with your MPC once the iPad communicates with the Scarlett.
Atm you only want to capture the output, but there‘s more and it‘s worth the hassle.
(iPad apps are generally cheapo in $, but audio quality is the opposite... if you pick the right stuff)
