I don't care what type of music it is. I was just saying I'd prefer to find the shit myself and, in my opinion, pay some dues, then to go out and buy some compilation of shit from someone. I'm not knockin anyone who does it but right now it just ain't my thing.

i try no to sample from comps myself but i still listen to some of them.
and sometimes u know i hear an open bass drum or snare i just can't pass up and before i know it i sampled them.

u learn from thouse. It will school u to artists that u would have overlooked. Just another way to find out bout names and groups. They have shit like steve miller band, the jbs, all kinds of ill cuts that i would have never heard due to that. Every dj should own some. i got the whole series on mp3.

I like to get my mic and record some drumsolos from my homey. He has a tiny little studio with an excellent drumkit and some good mics and a decent mixer and some synths. We just bang some sh*t and record it straight to minidisk. Me on a synth or guitar (just for fun and improvising, I cant really play) and he on tha drums. Later I chop up the things I like and start building a track, maybe song.
Its fun man! You can play with different mic settings, set things up in different rooms for different verb. You can go for some nice tape saturation and lots of other fun stuff to play with.

check out Drum Crazy all Vols from Ubruity Records i think the name is.
but there stuff is clean and mad crazy ill as u yanks like to say....

Jazz drumers such as Buddy Rich, have good drum solos. I look for these kinds of records when I'm sampling drums. My record store has no breaks
