Reading CD-ROMs on MPC X

The fun part about Translator making XPM files is it blows them up to a ridiculous size. When you make a program in the MPC itself, the XPM file only fills up with the parameters you mess with. When you let Translator convert something into an XPM, it literally writes the ENTIRE set of parameters to the file, whether they are used or not.

A simple one shot bass patch created on the MPC itself, would be say 15k, creating it with Translator makes it a couple megabytes. Yeah I know, 'its only a megabyte', but a standard 600MB Akai S1000 format CD blows up to over 1.5GB during conversion, that's a bit ridiculous.

v6 was the last one I used too. It was 32bit so cant run it beyond Mojave. No way in hell I was paying $180 to see if it worked any better in the later ones.

fyi, CD-ROMs will read fine on MPC 4000 (even through USB!)

Most companies don't release a new product and then invest effort talking about what it cannot do or no longer does, unless not doing something is being explained as a feature. Maybe things work differently outside of the US, but it is on the consumer to understand what they are purchasing and what features it has, if it is not listed then the buyer should understand it is not a feature, "buyer beware" and all that.

Hakai can do this. It wont load audio cd's but it will display the contents of an optical data disk. I had to compile some kernel modules to make it work. It works well, requires a powered drive or a usb hub so you dont brown out the disk drive on the usb port that wont supply enough power to spin up the disk.

Still won't be able to read an AKAI/EMU/Ensoniq/Roland formatted sample cd though. Proprietary file systems and all that. OS needs to be able to read those first..

Yeah, absolutely right mono. he could only scavenge the compatible types.
